
James L. Conant GREENFIELD -- James L. Conant, 62, of 9 Cherry St. died unexpectedly Wednesday (6-4-08) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center. He was born in Greenfield on March 15, 1946, the son of Chester C. Sr. and Eleanor (Robichaud) Conant. He graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1965, where he was All New England Prep in three sports. He attended Rutgers University on a football scholarship and then graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He had been a resident of Greenfield most of his life. Jim was a salesman for Dillon Chevrolet for 20 years. Following retirement, he enjoyed working part-time at Stoneleigh-Burnham School. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Country Club of Greenfield, where he was the 1967 Invitational 4 Ball Champion with Karl Spofford and the 1996 Father-Son Champion with his son, Brodie. Jim had been a Little League coach. He was a proud and active participant in his children's athletic activities and never missed a game. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid outdoorsman. Besides his father of Greenfield, he leaves his wife of 38 years, the former Donna L. McKinnon; a son, A. Brodie and his wife Sandy of Greenfield; two daughters, Melanie J. of Amesbury and Tara C. Keane and her husband Ruairi of Haverhill; four brothers, Bill of Greenfield, Chet Jr. of Amesbury, Bob of Rye, N.H., and Charlie of Greenfield; a sister, Mary McManus of Hopkinton; two grandsons, Drew James Conant and Rowan James Keane; a sister-in-law, Nancy Conant of Greenfield, and many nieces and nephews. A brother, Richard ''Birdie'' Conant, predeceased him in 2001. Services will be held Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
