Almer was always Elmer to me. Never knew his name was Almer and I lived about two houses down from him ,between a fenced in electric station, on Jackson Ave. Elmer and I did a lot of hanging out together up until maybe the 9th grade and our paths took diffiernt routes.
I remember Elmer always working and we moved down from him when I was in the 7th grade I think. At that time he had a huge paper route . He'd get up early in the morning and fold papers and stuff his newspaper bag that went on the handle bars of his bike and off he'd go, He got me to go with him once that was it.
We both really enjoyed our times together , I believe. I remember days spent canoeing on the Maumee and the Bean Creek . I also remember Elmer sitting in our bathroom watching me shave and making fun of me because I couldn't take the hot water,
Why Elmer had to work so hard I don't know. I do know they had a large family so maybe he had to. I believe it was our senior year he was killed. He was working before school at a lumber yard out on old 24 . What all he was doing I don't know. I understand he was backing up a truck intop a bay and was leaning out of the cab watching where he was going and somehow became lodged between the cab and bay and was crushed.
He was getting innto trouble before that with some teachers . He just couldn't stay awake in class getting up so early in the morning working and then trying to do school.
I was asked to be a pallbearer. I just could not, I don't do well at funerals and have hurt peoples feelings I'm sure by not going but I can't help it.
If Elmer had lived he would have been successful in life I'm sure!
