Robert Z. Bohan, of Annapolis died peacefully but suddenly on June 17, 2022. Known to many of his friends as “Bowtie Bob,” he was born in Ft. Dodge, Iowa on April 12, 1945, the same day that President Franklin Roosevelt passed away.
He was the proud son of the late Joseph T. and Laura Schuster Bohan and graduated with honors from Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines, Iowa. After high school, the family moved to Denver, Colorado, a healthier climate for a family of asthmatics. Bob graduated from the University of Denver with an honors degree in Philosophy and then a Juris Doctor in law. After working at the Hellerstein and Hellerstein law firm in the city, he moved to Washington, D.C. in 1972. He was the late U.S. Senator Peter Dominick’s (R-Colo) legislative assistant on the Senate Labor and Public Welfare Committee. Later, when Dominick was appointed to the newly created Senate Budget Committee, Bob was the First Minority Counsel to the Committee. During this time, he also obtained a master’s degree in Tax Law from Georgetown University in the district.
Capitol Hill is also where Bob met the love of his life, his future wife, Barbara Osborn Bohan. Because they loved Annapolis, they moved to the city when they married in 1977. After the hill, Bob became the Government Affairs Director and Legal Counsel to the National Soft Drink Association which is now the American Beverage Association. In 1991, he opened his own law firm concentrating in estate planning, asset protection and small family business law. He had a strong intellectual curiosity about the law and loved nothing more than helping his clients navigate the ins and outs of some of life’s biggest decisions. Cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Arsenal Futbol Club in London, Navy Football and the Denver Broncos was never far from his mind. Scuba diving with Barb in the Caribbean, traveling through Europe or enjoying the Annapolis Yacht Club made him happy.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his sister Mary and his brother Joseph M. Bohan. He is survived by his wife Barbara, his sister Denise de la Cruz of Salt Lake City, his brothers-in-law Richard, Robert (Beth), and John Osborn and several much-loved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the John Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD.
