James Cletus Steffes, 59, of Creston, Iowa, died Nov. 23, 2004, at his home. Services will be 10 a.m.Saturday Nov. 27, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. The Rev. Leonard Kenkel will officiate the service. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Creston. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and 6 p.m. Christian Wake Service today, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave. Memorials will be established in his name.
Mr. Steffes, son of Rita Gertrude (Fitzsnery) and Cletus Louis Steffes, was born June 23, 1945, in Carroll. He was a 1964 graduate of Dowling High School in Des Moines and later earned a BA from Drake University and his Law Degree. He served in the United States Army in 1966 and was honorably discharged.
In 1966, he married Roseann Greco in Des Moines and they divorced in 1976. They moved to Marengo where he established his first law practice and later served as the Iowa County Attorney. He worked in general law practice in Chariton, and later in Fort Dodge and Council Bluffs. In 1981, he moved to Creston where he worked in legal Aid and later in his own private practice. On Dec. 6, 1986, he married Sherry Drake in Creston.
He served on the Iowa Legal Services Board for several years. He also was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Elks Lodge. He was formerly a member of the Creston Kiwanis Club and Creston Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Drake of Creston; father, Cletus Steffes of Fort Dodge; two daughters, Michelle Steffes of Danville, Calif. and Jennifer Steffes of San Francisco, Calif.; son David (wife Carrie) Steffes of San Jose, Calif.; brother Tom Steffes of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Vickie (husband Jim) Kesling of Fort Dodge and Jane Steffes of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his mother, and brother Bob Steffes in July of 1994.
