In Memory

Steven Reed

Reverend Mr. Steven C. Reed, 74, of Urbandale, Iowa passed away January 9, 2023. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on December 19, 1948 to Charles and Jeanette “Greiner” Reed.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines, Iowa. A graveside service will follow at Beaver Catholic Cemetery in Granger, Iowa. A visitation will be held the evening prior from 5:00-7:00 PM with a Rosary Service at 6:30 PM at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale, Iowa.

Steve married Janice Waters in 1969 and was a devoted husband and father who cherished his time with his family and friends more than anything. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards with family and friends. He was a generous person but that ended with a card game. He was an attorney in private practice for 48 years. Steve was ordained as permanent Deacon in the Catholic Church on August 14, 2010. Before retirement as a Deacon, he served at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church and Christ the King Catholic Church in Des Moines. He was an active member of Saint Francis of Assisi and of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.

Steve was a very giving individual who put his faith into practice. He was a kind and generous man who always looked out for the welfare of others. His destiny was to serve others by doing God’s work. He and his wife were a part of the Friendship Force International which provided them to experience staying in other people’s homes across the world in order to develop a better understanding of their cultures. Some of the countries they visited were Germany, Australia and Ireland. They returned the favor by inviting others into their home with open arms.

Those he leaves behind is his wife of 53 years, Jan; children Nicole (Mark) Lavin and Jennifer (David) Calease; grandchildren Madison Lavin, Mark Lavin III, Zachary Lavin, Reed Calease, Deacon Calease and Parker Calease; siblings Sherry (Rick) Miller, Craig (Dana) Reed and Mark Sr. (Penni) Reed. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Diocese of Des Moines Seminary Fund or to the Priests Retirement Fund.

Steve and I clicked. He was a good person. Never knew him beyond high school, but I have fond memories of him as a good soul. My condolences to his family and friends.

Steve and I were debate partners in our freshman year at Dowling.  Our high point was losing by only one point to a state champion team from Newton.  Judges felt a little sympathy for us, I guess.  That was our first and last debating.  My condolences to all those loved ones Steve leaves behind.
