8/3/2010 - I added some pictures (they are the 2nd-5th) of my son and I flying planes we built. Mine took 4 years to build, Brad's took a little over 6 years. Both have been flying for some time, but this is the first they have been together. It was a blast and ranks right up there with the best of times in my life. The women in our lives made it even more special with a grand party after our first flight together.

Original Comments - After high school I went to Penn State and got a BS in Electrical Engineering. My high school girlfriend, Pat Gearhart, and I were married in 1962. We have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. After college I joined the Navy and flew the F8E Crusader, a carrier based all weather fighter. I spent some time in the Tonkin Gulf at Yankee station during Vietnam. That was one of the most excuiting times of my life.

After the Navy I worked at Corning Inc. as an electrical engineer doing some of the first applications of computers to control factory processes. A transfer to Corning's R&D center enabled me to work on several high tech projects including being a small part of the development of optical wavegudes; also catalytic converters for automobiles. Eventually I migrated into management, first in the R&D center, then in corporate IT.

I retired from Corning in 1998 at 57. I have not worked since as we have been too busy. During my work life, we owned motorhomes and aircraft and traveled a fair amount around the US.

Retirement enabled Pat and I to spend winters in the Florida Keys in our motorhome and the remainder of the year in our home of 36 years near Corning, NY. Summers are busy with family and grandkids. Every year Pat says this summer we will not be so busy, but so far, she has been wrong every time. :-)

In 2003 I started building an airplane, a Midget Mustang, and finished it in 2007. I have flown it for 1.5 years and it is now all apart as I add more "stuff" to it. The design is loosely modeled after a WWII fighter. It is a single seat, all metal aircraft. There are a couple pictures of it in my photo album.

Pat and I are still healthy and thankful for that every day.

OK... Now, how about some of you from the class of 1959 follow suit. Thanks, John

This is Pat and I. It was taken in 2008 in the Florida Keys. I was holding the camera.

We took lots of pictures, but this is my favorite. Brad is flying the lead and I am following. We are in SW Ohio near Dayton, where Brad lives.

Here I am not as close. This is Brad's favorite. These little planes are fairly fast and can cruise at nearly 200 mph. They are a lot of fun to fly and are very sensitive. If you feel a sneeze coming on, let go of the control stick. :-)

Here we are further from the photo ship. You can see the country is really flat and is mostly farm land. If you must have an engine failure, this is the place to do it.

This is a one in a million picture. There are two planes flying, but you can only see my landing gear. I am almost completely hidden. I assure you this is a real photo. I only cropped it a bit and removed some haze.

Here is the front of our house. I can't take credit for the flower garden. Pat is the "green thumb" person in our family. She also planted all the trees around the house. You can see the whole extent of her planting in the aerial view of the house.

This is a picture of our house, which is in the center of the picture, sort of surrounded by trees. We set our house in the middle of about 13.5 acres. It has worked out well.

This is my traveling plane. I have had it for 25 years and have traveled all over the eastern part of the US. It is a Cessna 182 Slylane.

This is the plane I built. The picture was taken in our front yard before it had flown. Shortly after, we removed the wings and trucked it to the airport on July 23, 2007 (Our wedding anniversary). It is called a Midget Mustang and is a single seat, all aluminum aircraft capable of most barnstormer aerobatics.

The plane first flew on 10/4/07. This is about the 5th or 6th flight and I am flying on the wing of a fiend's plane. The copilot took the picture. Notice the color of the leaves. This was taken in the Finger Lakes part of NY state, just north of Corning, south of Rochester and between Kueka and Seneca Lakes. The plane can cruise close to 200 mph and its top speed is 250 mph. It is a real fun plane to fly. My son build also built the same plane and his is flying too. We plan to dog fight, fly formation aerobatics and have lots of fun.
