Sr. Germaine Schmitt

Sister Germaine Schmitt was born December 15, 1902 and departed this life October 31, 2000 in the 79th year of her Religious life.

Barbara Caroline Schmitt was born in St. Lucas Iowa.  In 1921 she entered Mount St. Francis.  In 1922 she received the habit and the religious name of Sister Germaine. On June 19, 1927 she professed final vows.

Sister' Germaine's first mission assignment was St. John's in Bancroft, where she taught in the elementary grades.  Other teaching assignments were Lemmon, South Dakota; Portland, Oregon; Midlothian, Niles and Hazel Crest, Illinois; Keota, Remsen, and Sacred Heart and Holy Ghost in Dubuque.  In 1976 after over 50 years of teaching Sister Germaine came to Mount St. Francis where she worked part time at Holy Ghost school office and part-time at Stonehill Care Center.  Sister Germaine retired in 1986 and in 1990 moved to Holy Family Hall.

All who knew and loved Sister Germaine would agree that she was a most gracious lady.
