Fr. Joseph Sullivan

Funeral services for Msgr. Joseph A. Sullivan, 77, of 2245 Chaney Rd, who died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, were Friday, Jan. 22 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque.

Msgr. Sullivan was born in Dubuque on April 6, 1921 to Daniel and Anna (Wiehl) Sullivan.

He graduated from Loras College, Dubuque, and took his theological training at St Mary Seminary in Baltimore.

He was ordained at St. Raphael Cathedral on July 28, 1945, by Archbishop Henry P. Rohlman.

He served as associate pastor at St. Patrick’s, Watkins, 1945-46; St Patrick’s, Dubuque, 1946-49; St. Bernard’s Alta Vista, 1949-1951; Sac red Heart, Dubuque, 1951; Visitation, Stacyville, 1951-1952; St. John’s Waterloo, 1952-54; and Holy Ghost, Dubuque, 1957-58.

He served pastorates at St. Peter’s Clermont, 1958-62; St. Bridget’s, Postville, 1962-67; St. Cecilia’s, Ames,  1967-73; St. Thomas Aquinas, Webster City, 1973-84; and Holy Name, Rockford, 1984-91. He retired in July 1991.

He served as dean of the Eagle Grove Deanery, 1981-84 and was appointed moderator of the Eagle Grove Deanery ACCW in 1982.
