David Sutter

David W. Sutter, 68, of Dubuque and Apache Junction, AZ, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at Mountain Vista Hospital in Apache Junction.  David was born June 11, 1948, in Dubuque, the son of Willian Joseph and Ardale Agnes (Whittle) Sutter.  He graduated from Wahlert High School in 1966.  He married Beverly Busch on September 26, 1970 in Cuba City, WI.

After graduating from Wahlert his mother passed away in July leaving his dad with 13 children to care for.  He asked and received a two-year deferment from the draft so he could help his dad.

David served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1968-1972 during the Vietnam War, based in Norfolk, VA, assigned to submarine duty.  David volunteered with the Asbury Fire Department for 13 years and worked as a fire and safety inspector for the chemical plant in East Dubuque, IL, retiring in 2012.  He was well known for his square dance calling, being recognized as the inaugural inductee to the Iowa Callers and Cuers Hall of Fame, as well as receiving the International CALLER LAB half-century certificate.  He enjoyed camping, playing horseshoes, euchre, pickleball and had a thirst for knowledge of the Civil War and other American historical events.  He spent his whole life cheering on the Hawkeyes and rooting the Cubs to the World Series Championship, which finally happened in 2016.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; children, John (Heidi) Sutter, Jim (Monica) Sutter, Jolene (Dave) Buchheit and Dr. Jill (Brian) Powers; eight grandchildren; siblings, Judith (Gary) Conrad, Ken (Janette) Sutter, Bill (Paula) Sutter, Ann Freiburger, Steve Sutter, Tom (Fermina) Sutter, Richard Sutter, Sharon (Mike) Goedken, Jeff Sutter, Linda Walsh, Louis Sutter, and Mary (Lance Taylor) Sutter.
