Mary Lou Hayes

Mary Lou Hayes

Mrs. Hayes' obitiuary, as it appeared in the Uintah Basin Standard:

Mary Lois Reichert Hayes, 77, died March 10, 2009 following a brief illness. She was born May 9, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Julius Christian Reichert and Donna LaReta Hansen Reichert. Mary Lou attended public schools in Salt Lake City, graduating from South High School in 1948. Following graduation from high school, she attended the University of Utah, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition.

Mary Lou joined the Utah State University Extension faculty and served as the County Home agent in Duchesne County. She enjoyed her work with the 4-H program and the women and youth of the Uintah Basin that she adored. During this time, she met and married Fredrick Milo Hayes on Feb. 9, 1957. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1960. He died Dec. 10, 1970.

Mary Lou taught Home Economics at Altamont High School and at Duchesne High School, retiring in 1987. During this time, she developed life-long friendships with many of her students whom she greatly loved. And they loved her.

She was a valiant member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in many callings throughout her life. She especially treasured the time she served in the Provo, Utah and Vernal, Utah Temples, and the wonderful years she served as a missionary in the Washington D.C. Temple.

She is survived by her daughters Donna Hayes of Heber City and Debbie Hayes of Vernal, and a son Fred (Serena) Hayes of Heber City. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Shasta Fletcher (Shaun Lawton) of Salt Lake City; Steven Fletcher of Springville; Sam (Lisa) Fletcher of Provo; Sean Fletcher and Fred Hayes of Heber City; and Michael Hayes of Vernal.

Funeral services were held March 14, at the Ashley 1st Ward Chapel in Vernal, Utah under the direction of Thompson-Blackburn Mortuary. Burial was in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.

Donna, Fred and Debra,

I am so saddened to hear of your mother's passing. Your mother was always so kind to me. Her classes had "real life" applications and helped us prepare for life as adults. I often think of her, it is always with warmth, affection and leaves a smile on my face. I will miss her.

Warm Regards,
Paige Meriwether

Thank you MRS. Hayes, you made Home Ec a joy and thanks for teaching me to sew, and cook, and learning how to have and deliver babies through that wonderful movie.
I can still see Mrs. Hayes' hands in the big mirror teaching us how to make biscuits. She was a wonderful woman, thoughtful and caring. The world will not be the same without her presence. We have been blessed to have known you.

"Now Love"...Wink, and a jangle from the worlds largest charm braclet ever. Followed by one of the wormest smiles I will ever know. not to mention the patience Jobe. these are the first things that come to mind when I think of this wonerful Lady.
Mrs. Hayes knew what life was really all about. She was A single mother, a career woman way before it was cool. And a cutting edge educator so far ahead of her time. Who would have thought that a little class like Boys Home Living would have such an impact on so many of our live's? We were far ahead of other senior boys in our school district in so many ways thanks to her.
How lucky am I, to have such a warm, loving and caring inspiration in my life.

Donna, Fred, and Debra,
Thank You so much for sharing her with us.

I loved Mrs Hayes. She was one teacher that influenced me the most. She was fun and taught us a lot. I have great memories of making my prom dress and baking the cake for homecoming. I still use some of those recipes she gave us.

Thanks Mrs Hayes!

"Time in a bottle" is truly what your mother was. She has influenced young women and men in their youth to carry out her teachings in Economics. Her smile was genuine, and her personality beemed in the halls. She is truely a person of ettiqute, poise and conscious. I am saddended that you are going through a time in your lives when death has taken your mother. Finding peace in your thoughts and memories of her will carry you through the next few years to come, she may be gone from this earth but, never forgotten. My family sends you all a hug. Take care, Debbie and Rick White

To Donna, Fred and Debra

In reading the list of great comliments here, I see I'm not the only one who has been greatly influenced by your mother. She had a great impact on my life also. I had the privledge of working with her even after graduation. When I was asked to take over and chair the homecoming pageants, I knew I would never be able to fill Mrs. Hayes' shoes. I contacted her many times for help and I promised her I would do my best to never change the wonderful tradition of the homecoming pageant rules, and I didn't for 13 years! She has been a great inspiration in my role as a homemaker and mother. I'm sorry I was unable to attend her funeral as I was out of town. I send you my deepest symphathy but at the same time know that she is in a better place. Thank you Mrs. Hayes for being the person you were!

There is never a Mother's Day that I do not think of Mrs. Hayes. She was like having a Mother and a Best friend all in one. I told her everything and was never judged, only loved. She had more love in her eyes than anyone I have ever met and yet she had the warmest smile. It was a joy to go to her class. Where did she get her patience? FHA trips were a blast and the slumber parties at the school....wow! And she would just smile through it all. What a loving, kind, patient, generous, happy, understanding example she was. I have never known an individual that has had a greater impact on so many generations. She must have started writing Christmas Cards in June to keep up with all of us girls. Thank you Fred, Donna and Debbi for sharing your mom with so many. Mrs. Hayes will forever be a part of my life.

I'm not sure there are words enough to describe what a truly wonderful lady Mrs. Hayes was. She was more than a teacher to me, she was my friend. I think next to my parents she was probably one of the most influential people in my life. Whatever problems I had she was always willing to listen patiently and give me her guidance ...never judgement...only loving guidance. She taught me how to sew and cook, but more importantly how to listen and be a good friend. I know we sure did put her to the test with some of our antics but she would always just smile...and maybe shake a hand at us...I can still hear the jangle of her bracelet. We kept in touch over the years, I still have all of the Christmas cards she sent to me and I will treasure them forever. She made such a big impact on so many young lives and I feel so blessed to have known her.
Thank You Donna, Fred and Debra for sharing her with us and my thoughts and prayers are with you.
