Bobby Hex (Teacher) VIEW PROFILE

John van der Linde advised us that Bobby Hex (Brother of John) died  of cancer in Sydney in December 2019.  He leaves behind his wife Lynne and 2 children, Tammy and Christopher.

I knew Bobby quite well in the 70's as I was married to his cousin, Susan McDonald. We used to get together regularly to play Formula 1 - which was an exciting variation of an existing board game. We took this very seriously - and would play World Championships for hours. Susan's brother Alan made a few tracks out of paper mache - and he also hand crafted replicas of the racing cars of that era.

Bobby was a lovely guy - always kind and considerate. I lost touch with him when I moved to Johannesburg.

This was Peter Bydawell's tribute to him:

I first got to know Bobby from playing cricket at school as we played in the same side from U14C through to the 5th eleven where our enthusiasm for the game somewhat outweighed our contribution of runs/wickets. Our paths through life after school ran close often crossing.

I do not remember Bobby playing rugby at school but he showed up and played at DHSOB when we were transforming from a closed club to an open club in the early seventies and really scratching for players.

In later years after starting and raising families our wives became Sunday School teachers at the Durban North Methodist Church  in Swapo Road (Broadway) and I would catch up with Bob at my biennial pilgrimages on Christmas day or Easter sunday.

Margaret and Lyn became good friends and after retiring from SS teaching belonged to a book club up untill the time Bob and Lyn left permanently for Oz.

Bobby loved the "Bush" and after stepping back from the coal face of running his business, had all his camping gear on standby ready to take any opportunity to head for the Hills.

My last contact with Bobby was in 2016, shortly before they left when I prepared an Amending Sectional Plan for the extension of their unit in the Mount Edgecombe Golf Estate.

I was unaware of any health issues at the time but am told he had cancer in his eye several years ago. He had to have his eye removed and had a false eye. Evidently the cancer mestastisized to his liver. He had been battling this for a few months and was told in early December there was nothing they could do and he didnt have long. He died on 21 December.

Margie and I take this opportunity of sending our heartfelt condolences to Lyn and the family.

RIP my friend
