As some of you may already know, my father, Dr. Peter W. (Pete) Bretsky. Jr.,a distinguished paleontologist and academic, passed away on January 5, 2025 after a brief illness at the age of 86 in Cotnwall, UK where he retired.
Beloved husband of Tamsin, much loved father of Philip and grandfather of Kira, Nicholas & Sabine. Funeral service at Sacred Parish Church on Thursday 23rd January at 11am.
Donations, in Peter’s memory, for The Cornwall Historic Churches Trust and Sacred Parish Church may be sent to Marcus Wilkinson, Funeral Director, Alfred Smith & Son, 31 Clarence Street, Penzance TR18 2NX (01736) 362592 or via www.alfredsmithfunerals.co.uk
When describing his choice of Geology as a field of study, Peter would say succinctly “I liked history and I liked science.” He then pursued graduate studies at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he obtained his Master’s degree before completing his PhD at Yale University in 1968. His doctoral thesis and accompanying 1968 article published in the prestigious journal Science provided significant insights into the ecological dynamics of invertebrate marine communities.
As a professor first at Northwestern University and later at Stony Brook University, Peter was a teacher, mentor and prolific author. His research on the “Rules of Assembly” for Late Ordovician communities in 1986, showcased his innovative approach to understanding ancient ecological patterns. This framework helped better understand how ancient communities were organized, how they responded to environmental changes, and how these factors influenced biodiversity over time.
Peter retired to England – specifically, Penzance, Cornwall in the mid-1990s. The seaside town, adjacent to southern England’s “Jurassic Coast” is rich in history and its own unique geological formations including St. Michael’s Mount. He also returned to playing tennis, albeit with composite rather than wooden rackets, and was a formidable club opponent.
He inspired countless students, fostering a deep appreciation for paleontology and the geological sciences. As such, our family has established The Dr. Peter W. (“Pete”) Bretsky, Jr. Endowed Scholarship in Geo-sciences at Stony Brook University in his honor.
