Hobbies, interests:

Hunting, fishing building our house, building furniture.

How I spend my spare time:

Enjoying retirement and having all that "free" money coming while I have fun doing other things.

"Cool" things I've done:

I've participated in some really fine deer, sheep, caribou and bear hunts here in Alaska and have hunted birds in numerous states as well as fished out of a lot of ports around the world for billfish and other pelagic fish.

Something I would like to do and/or someplace I would like to go:

There's a lot of good hunting and fishing places I just haven't gotten to yet but I'm working on it.

PETS:

The kids have had a lot of pets and animals as they grew up and became involved in 4H. The family has had numerous hunting dogs--mostly labs and pointers. Our latest one is an English Pointer and we really like him. I put up a couple of pictures of myself with him. Each year we go to North Dakota pheasant hunting with a bunch of friends and Guiness plays a major part in obtaining the plus or minus 100 pheasants shot each year on that hunt.
We've acquired another English Pointer ("Chat"--named after Lady Chatterly in the book Lady Chattererly's Lover--remember that rare book from High School days?) in the past year and I'm busy training her for bird hunting. Mary Lou and I took her to a professional trainer near Kansas City this Spring (2015) then we spent 5 weeks "touring middle America" while she was at the trainer.
During the trip, I shot a couple of wild pigs in OK and did a lot of bass fishing in MO. After that trip was over we picked up the dog and came home

GRADESCHOOL/SCHOOLS ATTENDED:

After graduating from Memorial High, I went two years to college in Eau Claire with a major in pre-forestry. I transferred to Colorado State University and graduated in 1964 with a degree in Wildlife Management. I then married my wife of 46 years and went on to Utah State University where I graduated with a Master's Degree in Wildlife Management.

I then worked for two years with the Smithsonian Institue. We banded and collected birds in the Middle East before returning to Wisconsin to pursue a PhD in Wildlife Management in Madison.

From there I went to work for the US Fish & Wildlife Service in Washington D.C. for a year then taught at the University of Idaho for 7 years.

My final work assignment was as a research biologist with the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game. I worked in that capacity with the state for 20 years and retired here in Juneau

FAVORITE HIGH SCHOOL HANG-OUT:

Elk Creek, Lowes Creek, Otter Creek and the Missippi River bottoms at Nelson.

Words of wisdom or favorite saying:

Enjoy life while you are there. You can never go back.

The things I value most in life:

Good health and a fine family.

I managed to find a store that sold Leinies in North Dakota and I always bring some home to celebrate our safe return. Here we are on our back deck next to the Mendenhall river with the Glacier in the background.

We have a salmon hatchery in Juneau that discards the spawned out carcasses. I bring them home, freeze them, and feed the bald eagles in the winter. We have had up to 18 eagles at one time on the deck or lawn. This past December, I fed 100 chum and king salmon carcasses to them. Each salmon was 8-15 pounds and the eagles can devour 4-5 in about 20 minutes when they are hungry.
