Comments:

I received my teaching degree from Winona State University and taught for one year in rural, southern Minnesota - Leroy, Minnesota. An older brother encouraged me to come to Alaska to "see more of the world." I accepted an itinerant teaching position from a district in Ketchikan, AK. This teaching position was challenging (over my head) and lots of fun. I flew by float plane from logging camp to logging camp as a special education consultant teacher.
I met my husband, Dan, while scrimmaging against his high school girls' basketball team. I guess that's no surprise. Basketball has been a part of my life since those 6th grade Catholic school basketball tourneys when St. Pat's and their speedy Maggie O'Brien and Jackie Nowak (sp?) were running over the St.Thomas girls:)
This past spring I had the pleasure of watching my daughters play together in the AK state basketball tourney.

I later moved to our city school district because traveling over the week was pretty hard on family life. In the course of my teaching, I have had a mix of regular ed elementary classes and special education resource and self-contained rooms.

My husband, Dan, is a high school history and economics teacher and long time cross country coach.

Our family adventures have mostly centered around summer trips back to my family in WI and enjoying the scenic, but rainy beauty of SE Alaska where we camp in forest service cabins, hike, and fish for salmon and halibut. I would love to take my family to Europe some day, but that remains on our "to do list."

Hello 40 th Reunion Friends - Aug. 10, 2019 I had a wonderful at this, my first reunion since our 5 year. I discovered that a poem was taking shape in my head the next day. I humbly share it with you. I loved having the chance to reconnect. Sincerely, Lori Keil Ortiz
40th Reunion

The more time we spent together
the more the layers peeled away
from the faces of these strangers
until the eyes and smiles
of the souls we used to know
revealed themselves.
There. There is that dimple,
and there, the large brown eyes,
and there the grin turning up slightly on one side

That afternoon...a meditation
A prayer to love
and receive love.

My head argued, “Why?”
My heart answered,
“Connect, connection, thanksgiving
- because here is a moment in life
A gift
Go softly (and bravely) into the night
Or into the hometown tavern…
Whatever...

Smile from the inside out.
Speak first.
Identify yourself, lest white hair and broadened hips
cause some to falter.
Receive the hugs.
Fold into the embrace.
Reflect appreciation
for the fact of being alive after
trudging the paths of 40 years.
Mirror joy, but more importantly,
Help collect and soften and dissipate
the sorrows among us.
Just be. Just BE.
Listen carefully.
And in the listening
May it come to you that
an old friend, or love, or crush
helped shape you into
the beautiful and messy
person you have become.
Then walk away
a little softer, a little wiser, a little happier
a little more honest
a little more human.

I thought I would add a family picture from this summer. Here we are after a Mississippi River Boat cruise with the Keil family. This has been a a summer of a special journey. Some of you have heard that I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May. The prognosis is very good. I had surgery in June and am now in the midst of chemo treatments. I am doing surprisingly well. The anti nausea medicine available now is truly a miracle. I feel strong. I should complete all of my therapy by the middle of January. Having cancer is very inconvenient, but it lifts the lid off of an outpouring of love and support from friends and family. I wonder if any of my 1979 classmates have had to face a similar challenge? In any case, I do feel strong and very optimistic. I'm happy to be a resource for others. I encourage you to appreciate each day, and to make healthy life choices. Wish I could be at the reunion!
