Pat Bystrom sat across from me and Pete sat right behind her in Mr. Scanlon's Latin class. He was such a nice young man and the three of us helped each other make it through that class.
There were 'boy-friends' and 'friend-boys', and Pete was one of my best 'friend-boys'. I don't think we ever shared a class other than Concert Band, of course, and all that entailed, and Latin Club. But we'd get together after school. I'd go to his house where we'd take turns on his trampoline, and we had a weekend at his uncle's summer home, riding horses, puffing a few cigarettes, lots of conversations about what life held for us, and always, always his wonderful humor (he could have been a stand-up comedian). And when I needed someone to talk to, or a friend to lean on, Pete was there. Don't I wish he were still with us.
