Although we didn't really know each other in high school, Sue and I attended Iowa State University together and were in the same sorority. After college I saw her now and then throughout the years at sorority reunions.(I think the last time I saw her was in 2006.) After her divorce from Terry, I don't think she was ever really happy again. She lived in Edina across from Concord Elementary School and devoted herself to successfully raising two boys and pursuing her career in educational testing.
The year was 1960 and probably it was January. Someone asked me to come to that wide part of Minnehaha Creek (near Browndale) for a skate after school. There was a large pack of kids there. A game was chosen and it was kind of a combination of tag and bombardment. A person was IT and had to tag skaters as they streamed across the ice. There was this petite speed merchant. She was one of the fastest skaters I have ever seen. It was Sue Schaefer. With dusk coming, it was such a beautiful afternoon, the winter sky fading to pastels and the memory, a child's memory, of a cute fast girl. Au revoir Sue. Jim Britton's memory 2015
Sweet Sue and I had an on and off platonic friendship throughout high school. Her efforts to instill a degree of maturity in me met with zealous resistance at every level. Howerever, Sue was my '66 senior prom date and on that fatefull and fun filled evening we mutually agreed that we were better off as friends rather than romantic partners. May the memories of Sue remain eternal.
