Joe and I became friends because I sat behind him in class. He took me to Prom. We remained friends and kept in touch for 60+ years. He was a funny, kind and generous man and I'm going to miss him.
Joe was always kind and very funny. I had a great time talking with him at the last reunion. I'm sure his kids will miss him and we most certainly will.
There was never a better friend than Joe Chisler. He was brilliant, sincere, and funny. A proud Morningsider, Joe attended Morningside Elementary and remained a dedicated member of the community throughout his life.
His talent shone brightly in school—whether writing the 1963 Variety Show Cover Revue, leading an impromptu trivia contest for his English class on Lost Horizon, or astonishing us all by typing up a term paper in a single draft, complete with footnotes. (I still don’t know how he did that!) We shared many adventures in school, including an unforgettable senior prom, where I celebrated alongside him and his many friends.
After high school, Joe graduated from the University of St. Thomas in just three years and went on to have a successful career in retail management. He raised two remarkable daughters—one a child psychiatrist and the other a veterinarian—of whom he was immensely proud. Later in life, after retiring from management, he continued to contribute to his community by working at Blake School, where he was a valued and respected staff member.
In recent years, Joe and I met often, and he delighted me with his rich oral history of his beloved Morningside neighborhood. His warmth, humor, and friendship will be deeply missed by his classmates, colleagues, and neighbors.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, April 6 at Washburn-McReavy funeral chapel in Edina, Minnesota. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. with a service at 3 p.m.
