Amy was my good friend from 7th grade until her death this past month.  We both came East for college and stayed. I live outside Boston, and she lived outside Providence, close enough to see each other fairly often.

Probably the most prominent characteristic of Amy's personality was her incredible sense of humor. About five minutes of a conversation with Amy usually afforded a good laugh. She spent many years as a high school librarian in Cranston, RI, and I think her sense of humor enabled her to really connect with the students. She loved persuading disinterested hockey players to read a good novel. She was also passionate about liberal politics and animal welfare.

Here's her obituary that appeared in the Providence Journal, which does an excellent job describing what she's done the past 50 years:  http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/providence/obituary.aspx?n=amy-johnsen-harris&pid=190526458
