HOGUE, Dr Douglas Leon 1962-2001 At home in Halifax, December 26, 2001

Doug graced us all with his enthusiasm for life, love of science, sense of adventure, irrepressible humor, generosity of spirit and valuation of friendship. Although he died too early, Doug´s life was filled with exploration and accomplishment.

From an early age Doug excelled in athletics. Ice hockey was his first love, culminating in a Montreal Canadian´ offer. Football, squash, skiing, snowboarding and fly-fishing he all counted among his enthusiasms. His latest passion was for off-road tandem mountain biking with his buddy, Calla.

A man of science, Doug completed a diploma in Chemical Engineering at NAIT in Edmonton. He followed this with a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta. Postdoctoral positions found him in Madison, Wisconsin as well as Vancouver, BC. At the time of his death, he held the position of Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University.

Travel and global community played a large role in Doug´s life. His love of the natural world as well as his insatiable curiosity found him traveling to many diverse and unusual destinations. His interest in photography, music, gardening, hiking, wine, food and conversation was fueled by these many journeys.

Doug´s mischievous nature and sense of fun found him at the heart of many practical jokes. He was often the first to find the humor and irony in any number of situations. He was generous with his time and passionate about his life. Every moment was precious.

Much to his regret, Doug leaves behind his loving wife and soul mate, Calla as well as his two cherished children, Jasper, 3 and Zoe, 1. Doug was the beloved youngest son of Gwyn and adored baby brother of Brent, Bill and Brad. Doug lives on in the memory of his many, many other family members, colleagues and friends.

A special thank you to all of our wonderful friends and family who have been there with us every step this last year. We love you. Much appreciated is also the wonderful care and support of the Nova Scotia Cancer Center as well as Palliative Care and Urology at the QEII Health Sciences in Halifax.

Cremation has taken place as Doug wished. A celebration of his life will be held commencing at 11 am on January 2, 2002 at 12 Tremont Drive in Halifax. A second celebration of his life will be held in Edmonton commencing at 12 pm on January 19, 2002 at High Park Hall, 11032 154 Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Doug´s name may be made to Camp Good Times of the BC and Yukon Division of the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta or to Camp Good Times, NS Division of the Canadian Cancer Society.
