Comments:

After graduation, I went to TWC/UTEP. I dropped out of college, and joined the Army. I completed 2 years and 11 month tour of duty with the Army and Viet Nam. I received 5 Bronze Star for valor, service, and achievement. Also awarded a Purple Heart and Air Medal. The Vietnamese Govt awarded me the Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star. After the Army tour, I returned to UTEP and received a BS in mathematics. I joined the US Navy with hopes of becoming a Naval Flight Officer and received a naval commission in NAS Pensacola. After a short stay with the Navy, I returned to El Paso and taught math in the El Paso and Ysleta ISDs. I was hired by the Government and became a civil servant with the US Army and later with the US Air Force. During this time, I completed my master in education. I served in various installations in Texas (Ft. Bliss, Texarkana Army Depot), New Mexico (WSMR), Mississippi (Keesler AFB) Missouri (US Army Aviation System Command in St. Louis), Germany (Worms, Wiesbaden, Zweibruecken, and Kaiserslautern), Spain (Madrid), Korea (Daegu), and Japan (Tokyo). Japan was my last and best oversea tour spending a total of 8 years in Camp Zama, Sagamihara Prefecture outside Tokyo.

School Story:

I owe my success to many teachers who influenced me. My favorite teacher was Mrs. Oneta Darby, my typing instructor, who gave me the office tools I needed in my career. I also enjoy Mr. Melvin Erickson and Ms. Velma Winston who taught American and world history. I thank them for giving me the desire to become interested in world affairs and to see the world. Mr. John Pittenger, my geometry teacher, was the person who instilled in me my love for mathematics. Coaches John Leonard and Joe Anderson were significant in teaching me to believe in myself. I was one of two seniors in the varsity basketball team during the 1962-63 season. The other was Ernesto (Ernie) Jiron, the team captain, whom I enjoyed having as a team mate and friend through all the years since high school. Thanks, Ernie.

My most memorable moment in high school were both high and low. I finally got the courage to ask the only girl I ever asked in high school to the prom, and felt such a high when she said yes. I still remember her, a junior at the time, as being wonderfully beautiful. My miserable low was my failure to follow after that memorable evening. I have always regretted that, and even now wish I could have done otherwise. And I will always remember her name. That experience taught me a very valuable lesson that served me well when I met the woman who would one day be my wife.

We have moved to San Antonio since my initial profile, and we have now decided to live in t weTyler, TX

Till then, stay safe and God bless.

Martha, if I don't do it now, time will quickly pass me by and i will forget or be late. I rather be early and wish you a very Happy Birthday now. Also may you have a great and joyous holiday season this 2023. I think I would have loved to have you as my math instructor at Irvin. I would have learned so much more and made it easier to earn my BS in math at UTEP. I don't know when the next Irvin reunion will be but I do hope I can be lucky to meet you and Ernie at that time. Do say hello to Ernie when you see him. Have a great New Year. Love, Joe

My wife would have love to have met you. She loves to quilt. I can't recall how many quilts she made for Christmas gifts, but not longer. Forgive me for being early; otherwise, I will forget. But have a great day on your birthday. Have a Happy Birthday and have a joyous holiday season this 2023.
