In Memory

Charles Kloeber

Charlie Kloeber passed away from kidney cancer on March 25, 2020.  Oradell gave him a favorite son farewell.  Due to Covod-19, a funeral procession went down Maple Avenue to Ridgewood Road to Kinderkamack Road.  The streets were lined with people sitting in cars beeping horns.

Richard and I saw Charlie every couple of years when we would go home to visit and enjoy the fall colors.  We stopped by the store to visit and buy flowers.  Charlie would talk about their early years, when Charlie, Richard and Hunter Bailey worked for Mr. Kloeber, delivering groceries when they were in high school.

Charlie spent much of his time in Colorado, where he owned a nice motel near a ski resort; but he was always in Oradell in the spring and fall; he loved selling flowers, pumpkins and seeing his repeat customers.

My family lived on Oradell Avenue, just up the hill from Kinderkamack Road. I remember walking down the hill each morning to board the bus on the street next to Kloeber’s Market. Another memory I have is walking the railroad tracks toward the Oradell Reservoir. I think Charlie was part of the small group. There was a large gap at one point under the fence. We would crawl under and swim in a creek that fed into the reservoir. On one of our swimming episodes, we got caught and taken to the police station. We were lectured and told to go home and inform our parents how close we came to being arrested. I am sure the police were just trying to scare us; I know it worked on me.
