Fatica, a retired teacher and television news anchor, upset Erie County Council appointee Charles Augustine, a Republican, in the race for County Council's 1st District seat. The district covers most of Millcreek Township. "I'm excited. I'm exuberant," said Fatica, a Democrat who turns 67 on Friday, as he celebrated the win with friends, family and political supporters at Twins Restaurant & Catering, 4353 West Ridge Road. "And I'm ready to go to work." With all 17 of the 1st District's voting districts counted, Fatica garnered 3,334 votes to 2,696 for Augustine, according to unofficial vote totals from the Erie County Courthouse. Three County Council incumbents also on the ballot -- Council Chairman Fiore Leone and Council members Carol Loll and Kyle Foust -- swept to easy victories Tuesday. Leone, a Democrat who represents council's 3rd District, beat Republican challenger Mike Kobylka, a local broadcast engineer, 2,931 votes to 1,881, according to unofficial county vote totals. That district covers southwest Erie and the eastern portion of Millcreek Township. In western Erie County -- covered by council's 7th District -- incumbent Republican Loll beat Democrat Lyle Sanders 3,232 votes to 2,189. Sanders, a Girard teacher, ended his campaign in late October for family reasons, but remained on the ballot. Foust, a Democrat, was unopposed Tuesday. Foust, seeking a second term, represents County Council's 5th District, which covers North East, Harborcreek, Summit and Greene townships and part of Wesleyville. Foust also plans to run for Congress in the April 2008 primary. But the story of the night was Fatica's win. Augustine had been member of County Council since December, when he was appointed to the seven-member panel to fill the vacancy created by Joy Greco's resignation. Fatica stressed during his campaign that the county's multimillion-dollar share of gaming revenues from Presque Isle Downs & Casino represent a unique chance to reshape the community, and he believes some of the funds should be earmarked for an Erie County community college. Augustine, 70, is a former administrator at Pleasant Ridge Manor. He said he was disappointed, but happy that he was able to serve on County Council. Augustine called a future political run unlikely. "The people spoke, and I have no complaints," Augustine said. Leone, 73, won his seventh four-year term. He has been a member of County Council since 1978. "I'm committed to doing something for this community in terms of economic development, and that gaming money will help with that," Leone said. Loll agreed. "I'm looking forward to the next four years and all the projects we have," Loll said.
