Joyce Marie Galante, 73, a longtime resident of Pequannock, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2015, at home in the care of her family.

Born in Passaic, Joyce was the daughter of James and Josephine Marafiote, and was raised in Fair Lawn. Marrying Nick Galante in May of 1983, the couple settled in Pequannock, where they raised their daughter, Gina.

While Joyce's primary role was as a homemaker, she also worked as a secretary, taught courses through the Pequannock Department of Parks and Recreation, and was in charge of the herb department at Gro Rite in Lincoln Park.

Joyce was very active at Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church in Boonton, where she was a member of the Busy Hands Knitting Group. She was also a huge lover of animals, and had a deep passion for gardening and birds. She was known for the beauty and variety of her irises.

She is lovingly survived by her husband, Nick; her daughter, Gina; her mother-in-law, Anna Galante; her brother-in-law, Perry Galante; her sister-in-law, Mary Madormo and her husband Jim, and their sons Michael, Gregory and Nicholas; as well as many cousins in NY State, Colorado and Connecticut; and many close friends.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4-8 pm at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. A funeral Mass will be held 9:30 am Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church, Boonton. Entombment will follow at Our Lady of Magnificat Cemetery, Kinnelon. www.scanlanfuneral.com

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joyce's memory to Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church, 910 Birch Street, Boonton Township, NJ 07005 or to your local animal shelter would be greatly appreciated by the Galante family.

I am truly saddened to hear about the passing of Joyce. She and I co-chaired our 20th reunion commitee.

We had a great time doing so. Kept in touch for awhile. As always time got in the way, and, we lost each other.

Joyce did not attend our 50th reunion; however, we again got in touch. Joyce, Dot Weiner and I met for

breakfast a short time after the reunion. It was then Joyce told me she was battling a life threating condition.

We kept in touch for sometime after that meeting. Talked about our love for animals, and other topics of life.

Sorry to say when I moved to Pennsylvania we lost touch again. My best wishes go out to her family

especially her daughter whom she adored. My heart will be heavey for sometime to come.
