Our 50th Reunion will be a blast! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. But meantime, what do you think about what's going on in Washington right now?

"What do you think about what's going on in Washington now?"
Patty --What an interesting and thought-provoking question.
Like in "A Tale of Two Cities," it is the best of times, it is the worst of times.
Mostly,I have a great admiration and respect for our president. I feel that his administration's policies prevented this country from sliding into another abyss like the Great Depression of the 1930's. When he took office, the economy was hemorhaging 700,000(!) jobs per month. That has slowed to 70,000 per month. The major banks have repayed their TARP money. Unemployment seems to be waining. Health Care: I have a special interest in that, personally and professionally.I feel that we've just taken a step in the right direction (I'd like to see a public option.) See my review: http://calitreview.com/4840 (But I'm still not sure what is appropriate attire for me when I go before the Death
Panel.)
At the same time, I realize we're not in the clear yet as far as the economy.
I have concerns about our foreign policy, particularly as regards Afghanistan -- that "graveyard of armies." One after another of my younger relatives are serving or have served there. E.g., My nephew, Col. John W. Guthrie. USMC, just deployed last week to Camp Leatherneck in Helmand, Afghanistan's deadliest province. I think of our young servcie men and women there often.
Bottom line, I am pleased, hopeful, optimistic and concerned.
Now, what about your thoughts on the subject? I'm certainly interested in hearing further from you re politics and life in general.
Best Regards,
John

John, I find it extremely encouraging that your children have chosen careers based primarily on service, not being served.  You and your wife are to be commended.  You have done something right in a world gone crazy with "Ask not what you can do for your Country, ask what your Country can do for you!"  I know you are proud of them.

I plan to give some congressmen and senators permanent pink slips this year.   With no retirement bonus.

Business as usual doesn't work anymore in the Washington arena.   The Last Great Generation is moving slowly but surely into extinction and Generation Now is asleep at the wheel.

There is no simple solution here - just a surety that if something doesn't change soon, we are moving more and more into the European mold of dependency on government rather than freedom to choose how we live our lives.

The uniqueness and "one-of-a-kind" that has always been America is still there if you look closely.  We are Cowboys - we ride to the rescue over and over again, with no thought of consequences, just knee-jerk reactions to wrong vs. right.  I do not mean we are always right, just most of the time we really try to help those who cannot help themselves.

I have a deep concern for the direction in which our Country appears to be heading.  I want to be a part of the solution, not the problem.

My vote is the most powerful tool in my arsenal.  Yes, it is only one vote, but therein lies the solution to this mess we're in.  Will I make right decisions?  Sometimes yes, sometimes no.  But at least I will make a decision.

John, please keep up the Message Forum, I enjoy so much your insights.
