"A close friend of all who knew her, and a shining example to those who never met her.  Thus lives the memory of Miss Louise Leonard, who gave as only the very finest have given.  Unselfishly and untiringly, with only the hope of aiding the welfare of our students and education in general, as her goal.  Miss Leonard was always ready to take on any rpoblem which might come to her attention.  Her love for the students and her interest in their problems was so great, that her name is still on their lips.  No student, even today, attends Fairmont State without hearing over and again of her work on this campus.  No student misses hearing of the richness of her life, or of the kindness and sincerity of her deeds.  Thus lives the memory of miss Leonard, who gave as only the very finest have given."  **Louise died in 1948; the Mound staff dedicated the yearbook to her in 1949.

Louise Leonard earned an A. B. in Education at Fairmont State Normal in 1924.  While a student at Normal school in 1914 she served as secretary of the senior class.  She completed graduate work at the Teacher's College, and Columbia University, during the sumers of 1924-1929, earning an A. M. at Columbia University in 1929.  She began her tenure in the Education Department at Fairmont Teacher's College in 1924.  In addition to work with the School of Nursing and duties in the Dept. of Education, Ms. Leonard served with Miss Mary B. Price as a Gamma Chi Chi sponsor.

Ms. Leonard was born August 18, 1895.  In the 1900 census at age 4, a young Louise Leonard is residing in Fairmont Ward 1; she and her parents lived with her grandfather, Harvey F. Leonard, a furniture dealer.  Her father, Clarence L. Leonard, worked as a furniture salesman, and Myrtle, presumably worked in the family business.  At 14, she is living with her mother, Myrtle Rice Leonard, who is working as a news reporter for the local newspaper, and A. O. Rice, a baggage master for the railroad and H. A. Rice at 306 Diamond Street.  In 1930 Myrtle is listed as divorced and living on Alexander Place and Louise is listed as a teacher at the State Normal with a 56 year old servant, Dorothy Manley.  In 1940 she lived with her mother on Alexander Place.  Ms. Leonard died November 5, 1948 and is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery in Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia.

Miss Leonard's will stipulates that after all bills are paid "set aside a $50 scholarship fund for teachers or those preparing for teaching in Fairmont State College to be loaned worthy students-girls-called Myrtle Rice Leonard Fund in honor of my Mother.  The regulations to be decided on by the committee to be appointed by Pres. of college--two women and one man."

Miss Leonard and one of the recipients are acknowledged in the Mound.  "In the memory of LOUISE LEONARD, beloved teacher"
