NEW YEARS EVE MESSAGE FROM JEANNE MCQUILLAN:
Greetings OLV Survivors of 1966.
As we are mostly the same age, giving a month or two either way.
THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE!
This is the best advice I have offered to my classmates.
If you have not yet gotten a Shingles vaccination do so asap.
I have had shingles twice...once in my late 40s and again in my late 50s.
It is not fun. It itches. It oozes. And the pain is indescribable.
I will admit that I have never had a cattle prod zap my head, but I think that is a pretty relatable sensation.
The first time, I was at UF so I went to the student health clinic. On my follow up visit, I saw a different doctor unfortunately for him, was wearing a tie. When he examined my blisters, he said, "I don't think there will be much scarring."
Scarring! I grabbed him by his tie and said, "Nobody said anything about scarring!"
I am still surprised that the didn't call the Campus Keystone Cops.
Fast forward into another decade and I was walking in the grocery store when I got a zap to my head. That felt just like when I had shingles. The second time you get shingles, you don't necessarily
get the pustules, just the pain.
I had my shingles on my head. Worse case scenario because if they get into the optical nerve, you go blind.
My New Year's gift to you: Get the Shingles vaccine!
Best hopes and outcomes to us all in 2015!
