Perry was such a nice person. I had his dad Coach Smith for physiology and the day we received our Senior Rings, Coach came walking into class wearing Perry's on his little finger.
Perry Smith, I do not think we met while in High School. I did meet your Dad, Coach Smith. He was a nice and kind teacher. Coach Smith taught a class where I had to dissect a frog. Had to gather up courage to do that. My lab partner, Sharon Holland, could not do it. Do you know that all toads & frogs are so cute to me ? I loved finding one on our Middleburg acre and showing it to my 3 sons. Anyway, a classmate, Teresa Roache Parker, wrote she saw your Dad wearing your class ring on his pinky when the class received their rings. How very honorable. I am sure you were such a sweet blessing to your parents & other family members, and that they still ache for you, and look forward to the day when you will all be together.
He did not really care for football, he was a bit clumsy. But we had fun on the 9th grade team at Babb. He always had a joke....I really liked being around Perry, I remember the playoff game against Athens, it was away, we rode the church bus to the game. As Ricky Savage and I sat there before the kick off, here came the team, all fired up ready to eat Athens, or Clark County or whoever they were up! Down the hill they came, we are cheering loud as we can and poor Perry stumbles and falls down right in the middle of the gang, on the hill. Somehow no one else went down, but I sat there and thought how bad he must have felt, he dusted himself off and came down the hill last and Ricky and I tried to make sure he heard us cheering for him to "shake it off".
My favorite Perry moment, I think Cancer got him, first case I remember knowing about. I don't recall if he made it to graduation or not.......either way I know he was smiling for us that night.
I seem to remember that Perry passed away of Leukemia.I know during the football season of our 10th grade, 67-68, Perry was rubbing his side all the time. There is no date of death listed for him on the In Memory section it is showing year unknown.I think it was 69 or after Christmas I remember going to the memorial we had for him.I do remember during the summer fball of 67 Perry kept asking what they were throwing off the Tallahatchie Bridge, the song Billy Jo Gentry was singing at the time......
