I married Clarence Hartson on August 16, 1980. We have four children and four grandsons. When we were first married I worked at McDonalds and Clarence worked at Anchor Metals. We moved to Highland, IL and then to Trenton, IL for a little over a year and then moved back to Ft. Madison and started up a dairy, at the old Freesmeier Dairy across from the hospital, for almost twenty years and then we sold out to my cousin and went to work there. My husband had a symptomatic heart attack caused by sleep apnea and two weeks later I rolled my truck going to work on black ice on an overpass. Nothing that eight surgeries couldn't fix. I couldn't go back to dairy farming, so I went to SCC for two years and earned an AAS degree in Accounting. During the time I was going to college we moved in with my mom, as her health was declining, and she had lost her eyesight. While caring for her, I was looking for a job. While getting strawberries at Richers Trucking on a Thursday I had asked if they had any openings or knew of any and they said not at the time. They called me two days later and asked if I could start on Monday. I worked there in the office for eleven years and then I got a job in the Lee County Treasurer office. Two months later I became the Records Manager in the Lee County Engineer Office and about three years later I became the Program Manager. My husband and I volunteer at the Green Bay Chapter of Izaak Walton, where he is the President and I have been the Secretary/Treasurer, but now I am just the Treasurer.

School Story

I really enjoyed high school. We had a lot of interesting discussions during study halls in the MPR and lunch. I really liked playing softball. "Barnie" Hoskins and I joked all the time down at 10th street over the last several years about him always saying, "Hoenig, you need to hit it over the fence, so you can make it to first base, cuz you can't run." Also, being active in FFA and ag classes was very important to me and I was so honored to be the first female in the state of Iowa to receive the Iowa State Farmer Award.
