In Memory

John Sturmfels

John Sturmfels, our teacher, friend, artist and part-time parent.  His mind and heart were focused on stretching student minds and hearts with exposure to art, history, beauty, grace, faith in God and always fun!  He gave us opportunities to try new thoughts, roles and ideas; to see places we never thought of going, and to use our eyes, hands, voices, minds, hearts and resources to try new things and see in new ways!  He presented the safe platform for students to create art and experience the joy of being the artist; to play a new role and learn the art of self-expression and understanding of the human condition; and to stretch what we see, think, hear and project.  He loved us throughout his life without condition.  He is missed at CLHS, at Concordia and other churches, in Ann Arbor, and at Atz's ice cream store!  But he remains in our minds and hearts as a rock of acceptance and loyalty to his students young and old.  We'll see him again soon.

Photo and tribute contributed by CLHS ’61 Classmate Cindy Burhop McKay on the occasion of the memorial service for John Sturmfels July 22, 2017, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
