In Memory

Anne Hartman (Horstman)

Anne (Hartman) Horstman

  • Anne (Hartman) Horstman

Horstman, Anne (Hartman) 77, of Eden Prairie, MN, passed away on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, in Fernandina Beach, Florida. Born on December 6, 1944, in Fort Wayne, IN, to the late Edward and Wilhelmina (Niemeyer) Hartman, she grew up in Fort Wayne and graduated from Concordia Lutheran High School in 1962. After graduating from Valparaiso University in 1966, she married Randall Horstman in 1967. Anne had a decades long winning streak in backgammon against Randy, seeming to roll doubles on command when needed, and was unrivaled in family games of "Garbage" which is a type of rummy where you try to meld combinations of runs and 3-of-a-kinds until mom would go out. She was a talented seamstress who happily sewed clothes and book bags and Halloween costumes for her children in the '70s and intricate designs on to sweatshirts in the '80s. She had a lifelong love affair with water, with swimming in college, summers at the lake cottage on Lake George as she raised her children, and winters on Amelia Island in retirement. She was a Midwesterner who was never far from a beach, and in the pool every day she could manage. Sweet to Randy's salty, she was known to secure ready access to cookies, ice cream, or other treats at any time of day (or night!), and showed her children early on that sometimes cookies were best eaten with a spoon right from the bowl. She loved books and movies about sports and watching sports on TV, especially Indiana University basketball, but she wasn't picky. She was known to be more informed about the current Tour de France standings than a 70-year-old from Fort Wayne, IN has any right to be. Above all, she loved God and devoted many hours volunteering at church and leading Bible studies, not counting the hours her children waited for her after Sunday services, which she always seemed to be the last to leave. Anne leaves behind her spouse, Randy, children, Peter Horstman (Kirsten), David Horstman Olson (Aimee), and Laura Gennrich (Matt), 8 grandchildren, beloved brothers Steve and Phil, and numerous friends from anywhere she lived for more than five minutes. Because Anne split her time in later years between Minnesota and Florida, we are planning two memorial services. The first memorial service will be held in Fernandina Beach, Florida in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors Thursday, December 30, 2021, at 1:00 pm. A further memorial service will be planned in Minnesota in January or February. The family asks donations to be made in her memory to a hospice or charity of your choice. Anne was a classmate for 12 years. She was the very nicest of the St. Paul girls.
I was so very sorry to learn of her death. She will undoubtedly be mourned and missed by all in her family and everybody who had the good fortune to cross her path. She was quiet, sweet, and confident in her faith. I considered myself lucky to have known her. May memories of her be gifts to Randy and her kids.
