I spoke with Ken At the reunion, but I didn't really remember him all that well. We went to grade school together, he had been to my house when we were kids to play more than once. We went to high school together but were not close. Only when I read that he had died, did memories of our past friendship as kids come back to mind. Odd that we both came from the same poverty-stricken neighborhood, attended the same schools for the most part through high school and yet that childhood bond never reached fruition in high school or beyond. I don't think that it had much to do with popularity at South because I was fairly invisible there. Maybe it was because I was very popular with girls from other high schools and Ken was not in my circle of friends I hope I wasn't a snob and passed an old friend by because he too was invisible to most. have only vague memories of him at South. Now, I regret I didn't spend more time speaking with him. I know almost nothing about his life. I hope that his life was as fabulous as mine has been and is currently. I feel a bit maudlin about knowing someone nearly my whole life and yet never really knowing them at all. I wonder if anyone else has had these same feelings?
Steve, I think the three of us went to Smart school for 7th and 8th grades and Weisser Park for 9th grade. I remember both of you, but I can't remember a single class we took together. I left Fort Wayne two days after graduation. I definitely remember Ken telling me at the 20th reunion that he intended to make it for the 50th if he was still around. Fifty years is a long time to try to remember all about former classmates.
Dave, I remember you At Smart, Weisser,. and you are right, I don't remember the two of us in the same class. I left the Fort soon after high school also to go to Bloomington for school. I traveled the country for several years before coming home. I've been back for 30 years. But, I felt so close to my friends at Hamilton, Weisser, Smart, and South, but since back, not a single friend from my youth are in my current circle of friends. Recently, since the reunion, I have made efforts to reconnect, but I think it odd that in a span of just a few years, one's circle of friends can completely change. It was 1968 and the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, I took a walk on the wild side and that made all the difference. But now, it's grandchildren and retirement for most of us and I guess we have come full circle. Maybe be the right time to rekindle old friendships.

Ken told me that if he was still alive for the 50th reunion, he was going to attend. I am glad he was able to do so.

At the reunion Ken and I shared sweet memories of being crossing guards together during our days at Hamilton.Steve Smith
