Matt attended UMass and majored in history. In graduate school at the University of Delaware he coached the debate team. Matt owned a 55 acre farm in Pleasant Valley, Maryland and worked as an occupational guidance counselor in Oakland, MD. Matt later taught history in high school. For five years Matt coached his students to interview men and women who served in WW2 in the county in Maryland. He learned of its publication as a book on his death bed.
Despite health challenges, Matt as a member of the Lion Club, Big Brother and Big Sisters and the county historical society. He was married twice and had two step children. Matt died in 2002.
