So sad 😥.... Charlie was a great guy....Robert Whitcomb
Maybe it was in Winter, 1965-66. I knew Charlie from school, rarely from outside of school. He was always very easy to get along with, 'though we really never 'hung out' together. I don't remember where I/we was/were, but it had to be a weekend. I've had MANY occasions to regret my lack-of-control where 'alcohol' -- here 'only' beer -- was available. I don't remember if I had 'my car', but if I did, I was incapable of driving, and somehow Charlie knew this. Was I going home? Or to my car? Charlie offered, and I accepted, a ride. I was in the back seat, more or less lying down, facing the passenger side of the car. I was not 'stable', and 2 or 3 times, I kind of 'spit' towards the back seat passenger window, which I BELIEVED, with all my totally limited perception, was down. It wasn't. I realized, a bit late, that I was wrong, and I apologized to Charlie. He NEVER said anything negative about it. He was, as much as I can remember, totally ... supportive? of me. And I don't remember when/if I saw him again, but there was never a (richly deserved?) word from him about what a total jerk I was.
I can only imagine, but if Charlie treated ME that way --- how fortunate was everyone else that he really was connected to?! I am so sorry that I ... never? let him know how totally special he was.
YEARS late, Charlie, THANK YOU.
