When I am teaching my social work students about patients at risk for suicide, I tell them about Karen Umland. Bless her heart...she was odd, new in our junior high school, and never really made any friends. I remember her.

Think of Karen every time I drive by the house where she lived. It was such tragic loss at such a young age.

Encourage your children, your grandchildren... to be kind to everyone... Even to go out of their way to show kindness to a newcomer, even those who are "different." Their kindness to that person might just be the spark that gives someone the strength to go on. Every time I pass the Umland house -- I think of Karen, too.

I remember Karen..she didnt really have any friends but when we would pass her house we would say "that is the house with the elevator"..wish I had reached out to her more..God bless her and her family..

I remember Karen quite well considering the time lapse.  We would talk when hanging out in Steven Perks front yard.  Shy but not so much she wouldn't sit and talk occasionally.  The “wreck” was so disconcerting and mysterious.  I never really understood it not sure I had the capacity to.
