Darrell “Dan” L. Webster, Cedar City, Utah (Published in The Spectrum & Daily News on March 26, 2017)
On Mother’s Day, May 14, 1944, a blonde, blue-eyed boy was born in Los Angeles, California, and he was named Darrell “Dan” L. Webster. He did not quite make it to this year’s Mother’s Day (also May 14) because a rare, aggressive cancer of the brain (Glioblastoma) brought him down on Monday, March 20, 2017, at the home of his sister. He faced it with grace, but as the fates would have it, the time left after his surgery was seven weeks rather than the seven months that were predicted. His parents, Coleby & Yvonne Webster, passed in the 1970s and his older brother, Craig, died at birth in 1939, but the rest of his family remains: Claudia “Penny” Webster-Scholten (Donald) of Cedar City; his nieces, Jill Scholten of Salt Lake City and Monica Wurm (Joseph) of Cedar City; and a close cousin Lora L. Spencer of Fort Collins, Colorado.
His life was typical for a young boy in Fullerton, California: attending elementary, junior high, and high school, and body-surfing the waves in nearby Newport and Corona del Mar in summers and on most weekends. He entered the Air Force Strategic Air Command in 1965, with tours of duty in Thailand, California, and Mississippi, reaching the rank of Sergeant. Though generally a quiet and reserved man, he could become a joker with his friends and family wherever they happened to be. He attended Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona, and became a real estate appraiser working for his brother-in-law in Prescott where he met his future wife. Later he appraised in southern California, advancing to Branch Manager at Beverly Hills Savings and then to Vice President of Security Pacific National Bank and Bank of America.
Moving to Tucson, Arizona, in 1995, he returned to academia as a student when he enrolled and completed studies at the Desert Institute of the Healing Arts, a college of massage therapy, graduating at the top of his class. Following his graduation he studied neuromuscular therapy (NT) and worked at Loew’s Ventana Canyon Resort while also operating his own clinic of massage and NT in Tucson.
He retired in 2000 and moved to Cedar City where he could hike the many nearby trails and visit with his extended families (the Websters and the Sherratts). He divorced in 2005 and was in the process of remodeling his home in Fiddlers Canyon. When the Pura Vida College of Massage Therapy opened in Cedar City he became a much admired NT Instructor. Several times a year (for five or six years) he also traveled to the Costa Rica School of Massage Therapy in Samara, Costa Rica, where he taught functional anatomy and NT as a visiting teacher. During the months back in Cedar City he continued to tour his favorite places, eventually becoming a tour guide for Southern Utah Scenic Tours. In that capacity he led tours of Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands National Parks, describing the unique features and geology of each place as well as the culture and history of areas along the routes.
Dan was always present when anyone called for assistance, be it computer trouble, automobile repair, household emergencies, muscular distress, or whatever other reason that required an expert to fix. And, as a gifted public speaker, he would have audiences roaring with laughter while he kept a straight face. As a distinguished and tall, slender, handsome, and kind man, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him, and his family will grieve for years to come.
(A celebration of his life was held May 13, 2017, one day before his 73rd birthday.)
