George was born in Boston, MA. The family moved to California in the late 1940s and to Fullerton at the start of his sophomore year in high school. At FUHS he ran both cross country and track and went to the State Meet in the mile.  He was also the valedictorian of the FUHS class of 1954. He majored in Physics at Reed College, OR and then earned three Master's degrees in: Mechanical Engineering and Operations Research from UCLA and Stanford respecively, and, later in life, in Business Administration from Santa Clara University. During his career he worked for a variety of technical companies in what became known as Silicon Valley. He enjoyed many mountaineering adventures, was a long-time volunteer with his local unit of the Mountain Rescue Association, and was very active with the Sierra Club in desert conservation.
