A few years ago, Pattie McClure Meehan, Annette Shelton Culwell and I drove to Denton to visit Oweta. She was living in a nursing home there recovering from the wounds she sustained in an attack at her home that left both her best friend and boyfriend dead. This brave woman hid from her attacker and crawled to the road where she waved down a passing motorist who assisted her. She also testified at the trial against the killer. Although she had some lingering problems from her injuries, she was the same sweet girl with those beautiful blue eyes. We went to lunch, and even though Oweta was very quiet most of the time, she brought up several GHS stories the rest of us had forgotten. She also remembered running into my parents in the San Francisco airport and related that story in great detail. The last time I spoke with Oweta was about a year and a half ago, and she was living in the Austin area. Oweta always seemed so fragile and yet she turned out to be so strong. Now her wounds are healed and she is in no pain. Bless you, Weta. Love, Cindy

I hope you all don't mind my one small story about Oweta.

We were in economics class, and she was sitting in the front right corner of the classroom, and I was at the back left.  As this was our Sophmore year, I didn't know too many people, and really no one in this class.  I was looking around the class, and saw her across the room.  I was staring at her, and in a trance I suppose.  Then all of the sudden, she slowly turned her head looked right at me and winked one of those big eyes!  I must have turned so red, and heated the room with embarrassment.  She just smiled.  What a wonderful lady.
