NORTH KINGSVILLE -- Jo Anne Cox, age 59, of Poore Road, North Kingsville, Ohio, died at her home Friday morning, June 16, 2006.

She was born January 8, 1947, in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Marie (Hammer) Franz.

Mrs. Cox graduated from Kent State University and became a Registered Nurse. She was employed as Occupational Health Nurse at Esab Welding & Cutting Products, retiring December 31, 1999.

Jo Anne’s many memberships include the A.S.P.C.A., Nature Conservatory, Doris Day Foundation, P.E.T.A., Audubon Society, Defenders of Wildlife, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, F.E.M.A., Humane Society of the United States, Ashtabula Humane Society, Seashore Bird Sanctuary, North Shore Animal League of America, The Pet Savers Foundation, National Wildlife Federation, American Humane Society, and the Animal Protective League of Ashtabula County.

Her involvement with the A.P.L. included being a board member since 1992, and an active volunteer since 1998. She was instrumental in helping establish its "No Kill Policy" and the "Spay and Neuter" program, transported dogs to rescues all over the Northeast, and fund-raising projects. She and her husband, Ted, were also in charge of the A.P.L. satellite store at the Ashtabula Mall.

Jo Anne is survived by her husband, Theodore Cox, whom she married October 28, 1999; her son, David (Eydie) Chmielewski of Land O’Lakes, Florida; her step-daughter, Carla (Chris) Decoskey of Kernersville, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Cory, Katie, and Brandi; and two step-grandchildren, Nichole and Logan.

She touched the lives and hearts of many, and will be greatly missed. Her life was dedicated to the well-being of animals.

Ted wishes to express his gratitude for the many cards, notes, and flowers. They were well-received by Jo Anne.

Thank you so much for the obit. Joann and I were very close in high school but when she went to Kent we lost touch. I have been trying to get in touch with her since I moved back to no avail.
