Jim Tent

I finished undergraduate studies at Dartmouth, then Ph.D. in History at Wisconsin in 1973. Taught at U. of Ala. at Birmingham for over 36 years and retired on Jan. 1, 2010. Bunnie Tent and I married in 1968, have two accomplished children (John is a senior analyst at the Nat. Geospatial-Intell. Agency in DC; Virginia is a lawyer with Latham & Watkins in NYC). We now live in retirement in Frederick, MD near family and granddaughter, Joanna Cragin Tent (20 months). I am now a senior docent at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick. Bunnie, a retired math teacher consults for schools on math contests but is also now a skilled quilter, making Civil-War style quilts for today's wounded veterans of recent wars.

I remember when there was an election campaign for future class president as we were nearing the end of our senior year, and the juniors were battling it out. One of them was "Jane" something or other. Her posters were everywhere. There was even one planted with wooden stakes on a mound of dirt at a construction site in the large courtyard outside our classrooms. Being a pimply-faced jerk and avid reader of Mad Magazine, I decided to spend time in art class one day, painting a huge poster with just one word on it. Afterwards, Phil Velonis and I raced outside our class, ran up to an adjoining mound and pounded our poster into that mound. It read: "Tarzan!" I met Jane later. She was not amused.
