I moved to Phoenix my sophomore year and unsuccessfully started high school in Paradise Valley. I ended up quitting high school within two-weeks and instead, I received my GED in 1986 and enrolled at Scottsdale Community College. In 1987 while enrolled in college I became pregnant and I had my daughter Nashashibi (Shas). I transferred to Arizona State University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1993 in Environmental Resources and a Master of Science Degree in 1996 in Zoology. My graduate studies focused on desert fishes and their habitats.
After graduating college I was hired by the Arizona Game and Fish Department in Tucson, Arizona as a native fish biologist. I worked for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for six years before accepting a position with the Bureau of Land Management in Safford, Arizona. I have been with the Bureau of Land Management for approximately five years and my work is focused on native fish conservation and habitat restoration.
My daughter Shas is now 20 years old and married. She and her husband just bought a house in Green Valley and are expecting a baby in December, which really makes me feel old!
