Although I didn’t know Susan extremely well, I did know her.  Having received a spontaneous hallway lecture from Susan with Dale Carnegie theme early one afternoon, she always struck me as a very intelligent, highly intuitive, articulate, sensitive and compassionate human being with a maturity level decades beyond her high school age.  Susan was an ideal model for the phrase “best of the best.”  Looking back, I wish I’d have known her better.

When I was at Harrison Jr. High, I often visited Susan nearby.  Dinner time at their house was filled with laughter.  Susan's father and Susan would have the rest of guffawing in no time.

Susan told me to think about  "T.J Carney" after we picnicked up on the top of Guanella Pass in the winter. Susan and I could walk across the top of the snow but the guys all sank like stones.  When we tried to help them, we sank also.  Eventually we made it out.

I was at Susan's wedding and she at mine.

We saw each other at various intervals like GBHS reunions and when she would come through the Denver area to see her mother in Pueblo.

Susan helped my daughter, Sonia, who was bedbound during her second pregnancy in Burke, Virginia even though it was a very long drive from her home.

Susan was a bright light, friendly, funny and eager to help.  I had no idea her life was nearing its end.

I will miss her.                                                                 Deb (Turner) Carney

Susan, or as I knew her "Willa" Walls, was one of the few girls at GBHS who maintained a meaningful conversational friendship with me, a slowly awakening callow youth. Our friendly acquaintance meant a lot to me at the time. I believe we usually talked while "researching" social studies assignments, eg, reading current news media, in a study room in the library. I don't recall any outside of school or other interactions with Susan, but later I always wondered what excellent life and relationships she must have developed.

While there was little to reminisce about, I was happy to greet Susan again and introduce our spouses, at our 40th class reunion.

May Susan's memory always be a blessing!
