Condolences to Evelyn Day on the loss of her mother.

GREENSBORO — Our very much loved mother Ellen White Day passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in her new home at Well Spring Wednesday August 21, 2013.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the Heywood Duke room.

She was born November 18, 1928 in Waterloo IA however, has made Greensboro her home for the past 53 years and considered it her true home. She earned her B.S from Iowa State in 1951 with a major in Home Economics. In 1966 she went back to college, at UNCG and got her masters in educational media. Prior to that she had been a librarian and teacher from 1962 to 1968 in and around Elon College where she lived at that time. After getting her masters with 4 children at home she became the Media Director at the McNutt Center for Instructional Media at UNCG.

She always saw the glass half-full instead of half-empty! What mattered to her was that people enjoy her company and that she enjoy them. Her friends were lifelong and she stuck with them through thick and thin. She loved meeting and making new friends and said she could see the spark of the divine in everyone She was incredibly talented and enjoyed performing in plays and films in the local area for many years. Bright, intelligent, witty and humorous, she was always upbeat, positive and fun to be around. Her energy level was very high for her age, making her the envy of people much younger than she.

Our Mother spent a great deal of her life giving of herself to her family, her church and her community. In terms of community and civic involvement she was whirlwind of energy.

She took pride in being politically active, involved in community theater, Seniors Reaching Out, her beloved sorority P.E.O. of which she was a 75 year member. Mom volunteered her time and her many skills to support the Commission on the Status of Women in their Women's Equality Day effort, the Junior League, and the Guilford County Public Schools She was a friend indeed to those who are health-challenged, regularly offering herself as the designated driver and willingly chauffeuring friends who are unable to drive to dental appointments, to oncology and rehabilitation treatment centers. The Shepard Center enjoyed her dramatic speaking talents and she was asked to give multiple inspirational talks.

She has been a devout member of Holy Trinity since 1962. She has been involved in the life at Holy Trinity and raised her children there. When she was younger she was on the Episcopal Church School Education Committee, taught summer bible school as well as Sunday school for Pre-K nursery. Her faith was very important to her and she gained strength and solace from her spirituality. She has always been involved in the educational seminars given by the church and was an active participant. The episcopal tenants and doctrines were part of her DNA.

Ellen is survived by her brother Warner White and his wife, Bert of Burlington VT, son, Russell Day and his wife, Nancy Alex of Carrboro NC, daughter, Susan and her husband, Skip of Clemmons, son, Patrick and his wife Jane also of Carrboro, and daughter, Evelyn Day of Greensboro. She is also survived by three grandchildren; Olivia Day of Rochester NY; Jolie Day of Carrboro, and Colin Clemmons of Little Rock, AR. Other surviving family include nieces and nephews; Buzz White of Houston Texas, Kate Berhide of Saratoga Springs, NY, David White of Burlington, VT, Eliza Sawyer of Stafford Spring, CT and Andrew White of Stephentown, NY. She was predeceased by her beloved grandson Patrick Clemmons and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emergency Relief Fund c/o Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 607 N. Greene St., Greensboro NC 27401. Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home N. Elm St. is assisting the family. Online condolences may be made at www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com.

Dear Pirate classmates,

As it is sad to read of the deaths of some of our former teachers in this message forum, let us use it to share good news also. I recently reconnected with our creative writing teacher, Mary Alice Snider Lodico. She writes that she has a wonderful life in Waynesville, N.C.  She married an English major and both of her children were music majors. She has 3 grandchildren, 2 of whom live in Japan and one in the D.C. area. I don't think she remembered me, which leads me to wonder whether I was too well-behaved in her class.  It is often that way. Students remember their teachers more than teachers remember their students. Mary Alice inspired me by her enthusiasm and her love of literature and left a lasting impression on me. And her father, who passed away 2 years ago, was a colleague of my father's at the Greensboro newspaper. Bill

Mr C Obit:

GREENSBORO Robert Amos Clendenin, affectionately known to all his former students at Page High School as Mr. C, to his friends as Bob and his family as Poppy, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 after a prolonged illness. Robert was born on February 12, 1932 in Guilford County to Ernest George and Travis Griffin Clendenin. He was the youngest of five sons.Bob attended Bessemer High School, graduating in 1950. He received his bachelor's degree from Appalachian State University in 1954 and his master's degree in education in 1955, also from ASU. He returned to Greensboro and taught at his alma mater, Bessemer High School, for a year and a half. He was then drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in France for a year and a half.Upon his discharge in 1958, Bob resumed teaching at Bessemer. In 1960 he was promoted to assistant principal, and the following year to principal of Bessemer High School. In 1963, Clendenin became principal of Bessemer Junior High School. Clendenin later served as principal of Aycock Middle School and transferred to Page High School in 1970. While at Page, Clendenin oversaw the court-ordered desegregation of the school and left a legacy, retiring in 1991. While working at Bessemer, he met the love of his life, a young, beautiful music teacher by the name of Carolyn Reid. They were married in 1962 and lived happily until her untimely death in 1999. After his retirement, Bob met and married Helen Lowry, with whom he shared many happy times of travel and companionship. Helen passed away in April 2014.Bob was a respected member of his community, especially those with whom he shared the experience of being an educator. The Guilford County Council of PTAs honored Bob by naming the Outstanding High School Administrator Award for him, and he looked forward to presenting it every year. An annual award, called The Red Jacket Spirit Award, is given in his honor to a Page High student who exhibits exceptional school spirit. Bob was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro and a member of The Greensboro Civitans. In addition to his parents and spouses, he was preceded in death by his four brothers, Ernest G. Clendenin, Jr., Frank Clendenin, Ralph Clendenin, and Harry Clendenin. He is survived by his son, Carter Reid Clendenin and his wife, Monica, Grandsons Brandon, Brice, Dallas, granddaughter Victoria and a number of nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held on May 22 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church on Elm Street in Greensboro. The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the Virginia Gilmore room of the church. The family wishes to thank Spring Arbor and Hospice for the love and care shown to Bob. In lieu of flowers, there is to be a walkway built at Page in Bob's honor. Please send donations made out to Page High School PTSA (with "Mr. C Memorial Fund" in the memo), 201 Alma Pinnix Dr., Greensboro, NC 27405.
