In 2011, after 22 years in Utah, I moved back to North Carolina. I am currently the Minister of Music for Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cary. I am a frequent substitute bass trombonist with the NC Symphony, playing with them in venues all over the state. I am also a regular member of the Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra which has classmate Wally West as a co-founder and leader. I also play in the NC Opera orchestra, and other such ensembles, as needed, in the Triangle area. Additionally, I am invited from time to time, to play as a guest musician in orchestras such as the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Alabama Symphony.
I was the bass trombonist in the Utah Symphony from 1989- 2011 and I was the Music Director for First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City from 2002-2011. While in Utah, I was also the Music Director for the Westminster College Chamber Orchestra for a time and I taught trombone and other low brass instruments privately at Brigham Young University, Snow College, and the University of Utah for many years. I also spent a number of years playing in the recording studios in SLC (yes, there was a thriving industry there for a while) recording many TV and movie soundtracks including the theme music for Xena and Hercules as well as many Imax films shown around the world. Also, I did a lot of work on movie trailers, ABC sports themes and played for the music of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. So you if you watched even a little TV in the late 90’s into the early 2000’s, you probably heard me in the background!
My wife, Linda (also from Greensboro, but from another High School in town) and I have three grown children. Nate lives in Greensboro and works for a commercial landscaping company. Laura graduated from Marymount Manhattan College, and now works there full time in Student Services and lives in Brooklyn. Our youngest, Abbie, is a graduate of Westminster College, in Salt Lake City and has just moved to eastern NC to teach elementary school for the Teach for America program.
