MOTHER NOT INTENDED TARGET OF GUNMAN, INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE
Greensboro News & Record (NC) - Jun 16, 1998 Updated Jan 26, 2015
A Greensboro mother of three who was shot to death Sunday in her home was not the gunman's target, Greensboro police say.
Serena Rene Williams "was an innocent victim," Detective Bobby Edwards said Tuesday. Williams, 29, of 1712 Phillips Ave. was at home and in bed when someone shot her, Edwards said. Police have charged Melvin Jerome McCray, 22, of 1900 Kersey St., with first-degree murder. McCray is being held without bond in the Guilford County Detention Center.
Edwards would not say who he believes was the intended victim: "The only thing we will say is we believe he meant to shoot someone else."
Williams' three children have been turned over to relatives, Edwards said.
