What do you say about the man you call dad? He is everything and more. There aren’t enough words. He was our dad, our papa, a husband, a friend, a brother-n-law, an uncle Lee, a cousin and most of all a brother in Christ. He was our leader, our patriarch. He taught us many things, certainly the value of family, hard work and a commitment to follow Jesus Christ. Dad may have only stood at 5’8” but his demeanor and stature was 10 feet tall to us. He was always there. You could count on him for advice, counsel, a word of wisdom. He will be missed greatly.
He was a business man, financially savvy, a lover of sports, cooking, classical music, and classic cars. Dad was a fruit and vegetable salesman so you can imagine all the foods we ate (or forced to eat!!) He loved a good seafood restaurant that served a great cup of gumbo or salmon. In his younger years it would have been raw oysters as an appetizer (he actually got me to try it a few years back at a volleyball tournament of one of our daughters while we were in Biloxi - not bad). I will miss all the meals he has prepared. He had a way with presentation. He plated food (even a simple morning breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast and sausage) with precision. Things great and small always had a place. Dad was like that with everything. He was an organizer. Almost OCD about a lot of it but also could let things slide. He advocated for things to be done right. You could see that righteousness was a great value to him (do the right thing). He wanted to take care of you the right way too, always looking out for your best interest. He did not like people being taken advantage of. He made sure mom had all she needed, providing for us and for her in more ways than we can count. I’m sure there will be even more we uncover in the days ahead of all he has provided even in his transition from this life to the next (the one he would say really counts).
I will remember all the family vacations, ski trips, laughter around the table, the cheers from the sidelines at games, Texas Ranger games sitting 10 rows up 3rd base side, Dallas Maverick games, stories from he and moms college days, their adventures in what not to do early on in marriage, the years of supporting mom and the ministries she led and the Sunday school class they taught. I’ll remember the prayers he has prayed, the tears he has shed, the trips he made for birthdays, graduations, recitals, baptisms, births of children and their dedidications, Thanksgivings, Christmas’s and more. I will remember the years of serving at Straight Arrow Camp as counselors, the chance to share our faith with countless kids over so many summers, etc. (There’s so much more)
Dad, you are the Best. Thank you for letting Jesus transform your life so that we could see the power of God to do exactly what the Scriptures record. II Corinthians 5:17 “If any man be IN CHRIST, He is a new creation. The old life have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.”
We proclaim these truths that ring true for Dad this day - “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”
“Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
This is not goodbye. It’s see you later.
We will continue your legacy here until we meet again. We will care for one another and mom in the way you taught us. Love you!!
