There is a new question on your profile asking if you plan to attend the reunion. Please update your profile to show your response. Send your payment to Lori Hooten ASAP as we have incurred a few expenses already. Thank you!

Ok, Chris Coan has yet to log on, so I can't ask him. Does anyone know how Mr. Coan is? I loved is class and sense of humor. The oozers of evolution (I use when I have to mention evolution in Science class) and walking the halls with Traci to collect absentees, he drew us funny pictures on the absentee slips almost everyday. I kept lots of them in a keepsake box I, unfortunately, can no longer locate.

Thanks Kathy, Pam and others for updates.

How is Benny doing after his heartattack?

This article is from the Boston Globe newspaper and contains common excuses for not attending your high school reunion. Enjoy!

Grads: Swallow your pride and reunite

By Erica Noonan
Globe Staff / September 18, 2008

Not that we look old enough for this, but high school reunion season has rolled around, and this year is a biggie.

Over the next few months, thousands of erstwhile kids from across the region will be flocking home to the nest like overgrown chicks for the ultimate almost-midlife milestone: the 20th high school reunion. (25 Years for GHS!)

But there is a surprising number who insist on missing this incredible chance to face - and laugh at - the past.

Why? This is what we're hearing, and why we think they should change their minds.

The Top 10 list of excuses for avoiding the reunion:

1) I am not rich yet. Or, my job is not high-powered enough.

When will you be successful enough to face everyone? In 2028, at our 40th reunion? Please don't wait that long, life is too short to miss a chance to connect. Check your ego, and show up anyway.

2) I'm 38 and have not yet married, had kids, bought a house, written a book, sold my screenplay, . . . (fill in your favorite personal disappointment here).

You have been doing something during these past 20 years. Come and tell everyone about it.

3) I'm too fat/going bald/have an embarrassing skin condition.

You aren't alone. Not a good excuse. Pull on your Spanx, comb it over, slather on the Eucerin, and forget about it for the night.

4) I hated everyone from high school.

Everyone? Not one single person you can remember with fondness? Check your e-mail contacts list, I bet there is at least one faithful high school pal there. Message them and see if they are going. Ask if they would like to see you there.

5) Everyone from high school hated me. Or, I haven't been in touch in 20 years, so if they didn't hate me then, they hate me now.

And ignoring this problem will make it go away? Time to make amends. Show up at your reunion, make peace, and enjoy a special bonus - you won't spend the next 20 years being hated.

6) I can't remember anyone's name.

That's why God invented name tags and an open bar.

7) I'm afraid to see the one who broke my heart/whose heart I broke. Or, I'm afraid I won't see them.

Suck it up, they probably don't remember you anyway.

8) I don't want my spouse to know what a loser I was in high school.

They already know. They love you anyway.

9) I hate '80s music. I refuse to go anywhere where I might be trapped in a room listening to Duran Duran or Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Maybe your reunion has hired a sadistic DJ, but some reunions make the playlist negotiable.

10) I can't go because I (or someone very close to me) is having a baby, living more than 3,000 miles away, just declared bankruptcy . . ..

OK, in those very special cases, you get a free get-out-of-reunion card, and we wish you well.

But seriously folks, even though we lived before bloggers even existed - there is something to celebrate about where we came from, and how far we've come. Even if some of you are afraid it's not far enough.

See you there.

Last I heard (about a year ago) Mr. Coan was retired, living in Greenwood, teaching Sunday School and doing well. I haven't heard anything about him lately.

Funny you should mention his teaching of evolution. I was just thinking about that the other day. That is my one memory of history class. Nobody taught evolution like Mr. Coan (or taught it as fast)!

Theresa/Loretta,

My commentary on Mr. Coan. FYI...due to fate or circumstance, I never had the pleasure of a class with Mr. Coan, but I remember his graduation speech to us all very clearly.

He said..."be the best d**** d***** you can be and if you are a d**** d*****, don't try to be the foreman."

I have thought of this (his thinking/mythology) from time to time over the past 20 years and it has served me well.

Does anyone remember (like me) what Mr. Coan's quote was....can you fill in the blanks above?

Pam Ezell (Crowder)

Hey everyone. Is the answer, "Be the best "ditch digger"?

Pam....you win !!!

Loretta Marcom (Passen)

Unfortunately, graduation was a sad day for me and I remember absolutely nothing from graduation night. I only remember sitting in my chair and looking at the crowd, once.

I loved Jennifer's article. Please, DON'T LET ANY OF THOSE reasons be your reasons for not coming. I could use most of those excuses, but I'm gonna brave it anyway, don't let me do this alone.

If anyone has a picture of Tony McKenzie, please email it to me so it can be posted in the "In Memory" section.

01/07/09 09:17 PM #40

Lisa Holland

Remember Tony's dog used to come to school with him in 4th grade and lie outside the window of Mrs. Lewis' classroom waiting for recess so she could play with everyone and then would walk home with him after school?

It took a little thinking, but I remember her name, does anyone else? Just a little Tony Trivia.

FYI, Tony's sister, Robin died of cancer in the past couple of years or so. How sad for his parents to have lost both of their children!

I have fun memories of Tony. We sat by each other in several classes between 4th and 10th grades. He was a great person and had the best sense of humor. I understand that he was a minister.
