At the time of his death, John was a Battalion Chief of the Oakland Fire Dept. He was with the OFD for 21 years. Until he married when he was ill, for the prior 19 years, John lived on his sailboat "Grendel" at Jack London Square. When he wasn't working and mentoring his guys (to help them pass advancement tests), he was wind surfing in the delta, in Mexico or Europe... and/or on one of his motorcycles. He touched a LOT of lives in a positive way. There were hundreds of friends (and the news media) at his memorial in at the station (on the dock) in Jack London Square .
