Karen Kellogg Fain passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Howard C. Kellogg, who dutifully cared for her in the final months of her life as she battled cancer. She is also survived by her son Kristopher and his wife Lena (who live in Stockholm, Sweden); her three grandsons Magnus, Erik and Nils; and numerous cousins.
Karen retired from Denver Public Schools where she taught History and Geography. She spent one year in the Department of Defense Overseas School on the US Navy Base in Guantanamo, Cuba, at WT Sampson Junior-Senior High School from1990-1991, during the first Gulf War. Karen earned a B.A. from the University of Arizona and CSU-Pueblo, and an M.A. from the University of Northern Colorado. She was a 1975 Fulbright Scholar in Pakistan where she was honored to be hosted by several active ESU chapters throughout the country. She traveled extensively after her Fulbright, which changed her life – exactly what Senator Fulbright intended it to do for all recipients.
Karen joined the ESU Denver Branch in 2002 and was elected to the Board of Directors in 2012. She was active on the Membership Committee and missed only one Board meeting during her first three-year term. Karen was re-elected to a second three-year term on the Board in 2015.
When Board members became aware that Karen was ill, they signed a get-well card at the March 2016 meeting. Karen sent an email to give the Board an update on her health. Her last words to us were “Thank you for the card and sweet comments. Miss our outings and meetings.” We are saddened at the loss of such a kind member who personified the mission of the ESU.
