Jo Dell Carlson

Jo Dell Carlson (nee Nolan) of Bessemer, Mich., formerly of Superior, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 31, 2010.

Jo Dell was born in Fairmont, Minn. on Sept. 3, 1952, to John Nolan and Irene Schold. She attended public school in Superior, graduating from Superior Senior High School in 1970. She received her bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1993, with majors in art and library media. She went on to receive her master of arts degree in 2002 from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with an emphasis on curriculum in education.

During her teaching career she worked in public schools in Duluth, Minn., Gilette, Wyo. and Bessemer, Mich. In 1997 she and her husband were employed at the Karachi American School in Karachi, Pakistan, where she was the K-12 art teacher. She also worked for the Department of Defense at the K-12 school in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2001-2002 where she also taught art.

She enjoyed everything about life and adventure. She and her husband, Allan, traveled extensively in Asia, Indonesia, Australia, Africa and Europe. She also enjoyed their sail boating experiences on Lake Superior in the summer and winter activities in Bessemer. She had many hobbies, including reading, genealogy, cooking and camping.

She is survived by her husband, Allan; her two children, son Marcus Wick of Lake Nebagamon, Wis. and daughter Nola Wick of Duluth; a sister, Alice Chagaris of Charlotte, N.C.; her mother, Irene Hendrickson of Middle River, Wis.; a brother, Scott Hendrickson, of Minneapolis; several nieces and nephews and special friends.
