Today is a day that causes some angst, some melancholy, and some shrinkage.  Today is the last day for our pool in 2010.  We will close it tomorrow.  I was on vacation today and after an awesome breakfast at the local diner and then 18 holes on the links, I spent a couple hours in the pool on a spectacular sunny 75 degree Fall day.  The water was maybe 70.  It was bracing.  By the time I got out, I could not feel my lower extremities.  And as George Costanza said "I was in the pool!  I was in the pool!  I was in the pool!"  if you know what I mean.

The golf was pretty good too.  I shot an 88, which is quite inspiring for me, particularly considering this is only my third round this season.  Seven pars.

And I capped the evening with several of Texas' finest, cold Shiner Bock.  My lovely bride made stuffed peppers with peppers from the garden.  All in all, an A+ day.  If this is how retirement is, I am more than ready.  It is just disappointing the summer season is officially ending in Central PA.

I hope your day was equally enjoyable.

Well Jeff, you need to bring the whole fandamily down for a visit to the sizzling bake pit we call Texas. Our door is always open, for real.

We had a cool front a week or so ago and it brought temps down to a manegable 85 degrees or so and I got all excited thinking fall was finally here - my capacity for delusion is astonishing. It was in the 90's again today. But I feel for you bro. We hate summer as much as you hate winter.

Maybe you could head down to Texas in November cuz I'm bailing on my family for the weekend (something I've only done once before since they were all born) and making a trip waaaaaay up north - to Dallas. I'm visiting Duckett-Degarmo, Daglish, and Moorhead. Maybe you should schedule a trip then. Oh, and cheers on the Shiner Bock.

Mr Deluca,

I experienced a new local twist on the reuben vs rachel debate.  At a local restaurant here in Central PA last Sunday they had a turkey reuben and a turkey rachel on the menu.  I said "Whoa, hold the phone. This cannot be.  A reuben has pastrami or corned beef, a rachel has turkey."  My server informed me that a reuben has sauerkraut, a rachel has cole slaw.  The meat doesn't matter.  The meat doesn't matter?

I have noticed it two more times at other local restaurants this week.

I blame Nancy Pelosi.

The meat doesn't matter? WTF, er heck. Tell that to the corned beef Gods. I resurrect my stance on the debate on Paul's foodie web-site. A Rueben is Corned Beef, Saurkraut, and Swiss Cheese on Rye. The rest are posers. Sorry Renee (Paul's wife), that's the way it is, but we won't hold it against you. It does, however, seem that this has become a national trend. What's this world coming to anyway?? That, and they're banning Trebuchets in Erie?

Next time I order one, I'm asking for a Bologny and American Rueben on white, but hold the Kraut. I wonder what they'll do with that.

Thanks for your support guys, but I've given up on the Reuben debate. Primarily because I'm right and I've got bigger fish to fry. No, really, I've got some really big fish in the freezer and I need to get cooking.

On a related note I'm going to start brewing my own beer in the near future. Renee started a blog called "The Brewer's Daughter" (brewersdaughter.com) and our refrigerator is now stocked exclusively with craft beer. We've met many people from the craft brewing industry and they are just flat out fun. When a craft beer guy hands you his card and his title is "Marketing Tool" you know they're having a good time.

We had our first snow of the year last weekend, some of which is still hanging around. Both kids' high school football teams were in the playoffs and it was NASTY out last Friday. I guess it's that time of year.

Anybody going to be in Erie for Thanksgiving? Hockey game anyone?

I have a friend who sold fruits and vegetables at a roadside stand and his business card announced that he was the "Produce Pimp".

I will not be in Erie for Thanksgiving, I will be in Dillsburg, home of the world famous New Year's Eve Pickle Drop:

Hey, my son turned 16 Monday.  Yesterday he went to the DMV to take his written test to get a learner's permit.  Planned it for weeks.  When he arrived, the DMV was closed due to Veteran's Day yesterday!  Nice planning.  Instead of getting his permit, all he got was 60 minutes riding in the car with his mom.  We gained one more day of peace of mind and safety on the roads.

Wish us luck as that all ends today.

Boy can I relate....At least you can thank your lucky stars you don't live in Houston with a new, inexperienced driver. Talk about a nail biting experience! I have three of them driving now. I am a very tired and stressed out mother as a result, and let's not even go into the insurance premiums thing...

No Thanksgiving in Erie for me either. Waa Waa. However, I am heading to Grapevine, Plano, and Murphy Texas this weekend!!! I haven't seen Moorhead since the early 80's, and Colleen since a little later in the 80's as well. I found out she lived a couple of miles from me in Katy around 1995 and neither of us knew it at the time. Small, small world.

Sharie,

Have a great time catching up with old friends.  What a great birthday treat.  Hey, if Erik slips you the tongue and tries to fondle you, don't let him tell you I suggested it would be a special birthday treat for you!  I had nothing to do with it, as far as you know.  Have a cold Shiner Bock for me.  Sorry I cannot join you, but I have to rearrange my sock drawer this weekend.

And the rest of you:  Where are the posts?  Nothing to contribute?  Nothing happening in your lives you feel compelled to share?  Holidays nearly upon us.  On the cusp of a new year.  Anything?

Major Tom to Ground Control, it's lonely out in space

Sorry, I haven't been on in awhile.  My update is Evan (my grandson) turned 2 on 10/30/10 and he had a great time at his party.  Isla (my granddaughter is three months old) and she just started rolling over.  My son and his fiance are still working on their wedding plans for 10/8/11.  I am still typing from home but I also work 2 or 3 nights a week in the Claims Dept to pick up more hours.  For Thanksgiving, we will be eating at our house and we will have our kids and their significant others and the grandchildren over for dinner.  Then we all usually go to the Otters game (don't know if the little ones will go to the game).  We have no big plans for Christmas yet either.  I think we are reserving our energy for our son's Stag 'n Drag next summer and then his wedding in the fall.

Two years old...wow, it seems he was born just yesterday and where the heck are the new pics of both of them? Christmas should be fun with the two year old this year. Happy shopping! And another wedding...I wonder what it'll be like when that starts around here. At least I only have one daughter, so we won't have to pay for them all.

It isn't too late to conjure up a business trip to Dallas either Jeff, forget the sock drawer. Maybe you need to tie up some loose ends or something from the last time you were there. Dags won't kick you off the couch this time, no cold hotel for you, the couch is yours. Either that, or you could camp out somewhere in Erik's palatial estate for the weekend. We'll send out a posse if you become lost.

I'm looking forward to my birthday treat, that is the trip to Dallas I mean. I'm staying with Colleen and we're all heading to Erik's for drinks and then to the booming metropolis of downtown Grapevine Texas for dinner. A cool town from what I hear and there are grape vineyards there as well. Erik never left grape country.

Oh, and Jeff's right, where are the rest of you? I think they all abandoned us for facebook.

And Paul, cool on the beer thing, and I also liked your post on journeyman cook about the healthy eating and your trip to Cali. I also liked the soup page. I realize I'm getting awfully wordy here (as usual) but Jarrod's girlfriend is attending the Culinary Institute here in Houston. It's supposedly one of the best and she's a phenomenal cook already. Geez, it sounds like I just took a hit of speed or something - I didn't though, I just talk to freaking much.

Spectacular Jerri!

Thanks for sharing.  You know, I just realized you named your first born after me, Jeff Hart. Jeff Gronborg, and Jeff Maille.  I don't mean to speak for the Jeffs, but I am sure they are as honored as I am by this.  It is, after all, the best masculine name, bar none.  Bar none people!  So thanks for thinking of us and giving your son all he would ever need to be successful in this world...the name Jeff.

All I need is a cool buzz and some tasty waves and I'm fine....

Jeff, yes, I definitely was influenced by all the famous Jeffs from high school when I named my son (and also the fact that it is a family name but that only had a little to do with it.)

Wishing everyone here a Happy Thanksgiving!

No trip to Erie, as hubby has to work tonight (yearly schedule).  Luckily for me, that means I don't have to cook !!!   Well, I do cook up some desserts for him to take into work and share with his coworkers, but that's as far as it goes.

Our "Thanksgiving Day Tradition" is to get up, have a leisurely breakfast, watch the "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade", get dressed, then go out to eat.  Then hubby goes to work, and my daughter and I head home and start looking at all the decorations we want to put up for Christmas and start that.  Then, we spend the evening watching "The Grinch" (original cartoon version - the only one that matters), and "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and, if time permits  "The Muppets Family Christmas".

Next year will definately be different as we got word this week that my sister-in-law and family will be moving to New Hampshire from Connecticut sometime after the school year is over, as my brother-in-law got promoted at work and now covers New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine for his company.  It will be so nice to have family that much closer!!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ONE AND ALL!!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I ate too much, as usual. It looks like Erie is buried in snow right now. Made national news all the way down to Houston.

Oh, and my little getaway to Dallas was wonderful. We just fell into step like no time had passed. It was wonderful to see them again (I've seen Mark, but hadn't seen Colleen or Erik in decades). And of course we all acted very mature, adult like, like the grown ups that we are, as far as you know anyway. No matter what you may hear...we acted like grown ups, honest, really, there was absolutely nothing about us that wasn't mature, for real, you have to believe me!

Don't worry Jerri, I can't spel either, or type, or whatever. Now that I think about it, I probably don't think too clearly all the time either :)

Getting ready to head towards home!  Looking forward to spending some time in Harbor Creek and the surrounding area (Barbatos - get those pepperoni balls ready)!!!

Happy Holidays to one and all.  May you have the Merriest of Christmases and a Healthy, Happy, One-0f-A-Kind New Year!!!

Jerri, it is OK to "with" us a happy holiday.  I mean, looking at that mouth full of braces, you probably do lisp.  Nothing to be ashamed of.  When you finally get them off, it will probably go away.

I am on holiday tomorrow and Friday, so do not be bugging me people.  I am not available.  I am on holiday.  Back to the salt mines for me next week though.  I have more than two weeks of vacation left to use, not enough days left in the year to use it, and waaaaay too much work to even think about taking off.  As in life, our company policy is "use it or lose it" so if anyone needs any extra days of 2010 vacation, you can have mine.  Tell your supervisor it's OK, I said so.

I had my third prostate biopsy of 2010 last week.  Still finding nothing.  Now I think the doctor is just messing with me.  I am beginning to think perhaps he admires my spotty white ass, he's only human after all.  I know I am starting to understand the appeal of the enema!  What?  Too much information?  Deal with it people.  It's Christmas dammit.

I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, healthy, prosperous 2011.

Clark Griswold
